Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

I have been looking for a new job for ages. I really don't like the present one but ive been here a long time. When I left college i was lucky to get a really good job with a big company - simply cause i went on work experience with them and then when a few people left i was still in touch with them and managed to get 2 good years working there. They re structured and i was left jobless for 3 months eventually I got a job but I would like a change something with more of a challenge and a bit more varied.
Now tho when ever I apply for something you just seem to have to play this stupid game of answer xyz question with the most saccharine coated answer you can. OR you apply for a job this time as a 1st line support person and get told you don't work on a help desk at the moment so your not suitable. Its a joke! I have previous 1st line experience and i make it quiet clear I am adaptable in every cover letter I send. MY other fav interview "joke" is to go and then get told we have had an internal candidate here for 3 months who knows our systems better. Well of course they will they have been there 3 months why waste 7 peoples time advertising the job (i know its the law but its a stupid one)

    Permanently confused

Re: Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

I'm just about to Leave Uni so time to find a real job. I've always had loads of confidence in interviews (bordering on arrogance I'm told) but that was mainly because I didn't really care whether I got the job or not..

Now I'm feeling the pressure a bit more and not looking forward to the process without the confidence lol

My saving grace is the gift of the gab, I can normally flip an interview from me onto the interviewer which has worked wonders for me so far.

Maybe I'll just run back to education and hide there a little while longer

It is a painful process though, I've always got jobs that I've been given interviews for but I've had a lot of applications rejected without interview which is annoying to say the least. It's just something you stick at I guess.

That wouldn't be local authority work would it?

They decide they want to promote someone internally and then create a new position for them. To keep within their equal opportunities policy they have to advertise it externally, even if they have no intention of giving the post to someone else. Which you've pointed out.

Private sector is one thing, they foot the bill and keep the costs down. Local authorities obviously have to take full page adds and spend THOUSANDS out of the public coffers.

Re: Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

Regarding your helpdesk job application problem and the similar, it is all really about selling yourself. It does suck that you are expected to write boastful CVs polished for the specific job, but that's the truth of getting a post.

Of course, what with applying for jobs soon myself, part of me is wary of sharing all my tricks

Re: Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

I have been applying since December or so for a job.

I have had one interview already, and should hear back from them soon

I have an interview with Microsoft for the final stages of applying for a job with them next week, applied to 30 or so companies

It's hard work but I hope it's worth it!

Re: Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

The situation with new jobs is always stressful, time consuming but at the end of the process the final reward is generally always worth it.

I've just done the same myself and i've got myself a shiny new job.

Annoying, slow, but its actually only taken a month, (a new personal record)

A month is a long time at a place you don't enjoy any more tho.

Re: Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

I have been looking for about a year. I have had 3 interviews all last year annoyingly, 1 which i felt was rigged. 1 where i was told i was the 2nd choice, and 1 that i made a bit of a mess off. I tend to the find tho that i never really feel im given a chance to sell my self, Especially the last interview they didn't know anything about me and seemed to do their best to interrupt me on every occasion. Im not the most confident person either and im very very shy so its bloody hard. Oh well now ive calmed down a bit ill just have to wait for the next opportunity and try and make something happen.

    Permanently confused

Re: Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

I just get depressed looking for jobs. I get paid peanuts where I am and all the jobs I can do get like double what I earn now easily. Just put an application for one now, so fingers crossed.

Oh god it's depressing, frustrating and downright poitnless at time.

The best one I had was having the interview on Friday morning and getting the rejection letter through STANDARD POST on Saturday morning - had they even bothered to wait for my interview to finish????

OUP that was - evil company.

Re: Is looking for a new job the most frustrating thing in the world

i got so bored looking for a job that i gave up even looking. 7 years unemployment later and i'm bored being unemployed so the slightly less boring 'looking for a job' actually sounds interesting now.

and i do kind of need money, my current PC has got melted parts, scorch marks from overheating from when the fan controller turned off, clunky fans and dodgy ram that is only held in the slot by the side fan blowing on it at 1600rpm, and the air pressure created holds it in. the monitor has blown 3 fuses as well...
