Are you sure it matters tho?, i'm thinking of Allofmp3.com where suits where filed and it didn't do anything to take the site down as in Russia it's all legal.

Sure they found other ways to affect it with Credit card transactions being stopped on the site but even so....

Taking action in a country really has to be where that company is based otherwise your ruling will be ineffectual.

or the UKians just get European torrentsites.. based in places where the rules are based on how much money you have in your pocket *cough*switzerland*cough*

I love the fact that the hacker case is dismissed though...

it must matter because there is a rumour going round that some big torrent sites are relocating there servers into an island of some sort.

edit: how the hell did they manage to win this case. they themselves commited a crime by using a hacker to hack into torrentspy

Unfortunately Russia are not signatories to any of the international copyright treaties that allow people to bring actions against people in other countries, hence the reason there was pretty much nothing anyone could do about Allofmp3.com doing as they pleased...

From dictionary.com:
3. Computer Slang.
a. a computer enthusiast.
b. a microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems.
n. Informal
1. One who is proficient at using or programming a computer; a computer buff.
2. One who uses programming skills to gain illegal access to a computer network or file.
Not to be pedantic but there are such things as good hackers as in people that are very good at coding.

It's been down since 24th March.

I'd like to see some statistics for torrent traffic before and after they shut down their site, but I'm pretty sure any decreases would be very small and short lived as people find any one of the large number of torrent searching sites based in places other than the USA that are going to be much much harder to shut down than torrentspy was.

Also, the ammount of money they owe is insignificant because they simply don't have it, I doubt they'll see even 1% of that figure.

Re: torrent spy owes 111million dollars!

What gets me is people that think its all fine to download from these sites, You can have a go at the "you wouldnt steal a car" adverts but the message is quite right imo.
Theres the argument that there not loosing sales if you pirate it as you might not have bought it in the first place?, Why not just download a legal demo then decide if you want it or not?.
Hopefully then without piracy they will spend more money on development of the games / films and we will all benfit from better content?

The laws in scandanavia mean most are based there, sweeden particular.
Because the sites are not hosting the materials with bittorrent the sites are classed as search engines so fall through many loopholes and are in fact completely legal websites.

Although most get threatening letters from US lawyers because they're not US based, US law doesn't aply. (may seem obvious but the layers don't get it)

As for morality, it's very difficuly to feel moral implications for DL a DVD or music when you see people from the idustry on MTV cribs and thier astronomical bank balances anyway.
I'm not saying it's right as it's obiously wrong, but taking so little from those already with so much means you just don't care.

If DVDs were £5 and Music £4-5 no one would need to bother and sales and profits would skyrocket.

Great seen from south park regarding downloads i suggest you take a look, 'see that guy there crying by his swimming pool in front of his mansion, he's the lead guitarist from metalica and he wanted to gold plate his pool side bar, he's gonna have to wait a month now due to people downloading his music'

Re: torrent spy owes 111million dollars!

Why don't they just get to the true source of the problem and take down the internet!!!

On a more serious note torrentspy was a good site and it's a shame to see it go, but the are many other sites around that users will now inevitably go to instead.

Probably the most useful thing that sites like this are for is when you hear a song somewhere on an advert or TV program, but there's no point going out and buying the whole album for the one song. You'll just download it quickly, listen to it a few times and then never see it again.

I personally do like actually having the original CD. The Dad of a mate of mine must have a collection of 500-600 CDs all on shelves in their computer room and it's just an amazing sight.

Re: torrent spy owes 111million dollars!

LOL music artist dont make there profit on the amount of cd's they sell. they get it from concert etc.

IMO only pc games are taking a big hit in torrent downloading.

movies have cinema's that the average joe goes to and watch the film for 6-7 pounds A PERSON.

music as stated above.

console games: your console needs to have a mod chip in it to play pirated games and most people are scared to even try openinging up there console voiding the warranty and the risk of your £200-£300 spent on it going down the drain.

pc software doesnt take that much of a hit from pirated copies because software companies like MS and adobe generate huge amount of profit from corporate businesses who shell out £1000's of there cash to attain licences for just 3-4 pc's in there office. OS costs around £100+, Adobe costs 400-500 and thats just for photoshop.

Which leads to pc gaming: easy to pirate, download and play. no need for modchips inside your system.

There thats my take on this whole torrent thing.

perhaps becuase without our money no one will bother to produce updates, new versions and more games?

why the hell should they bother when everyone like you said will just download for free.

and you say you werent going to buy them anyway, if there wernt the option of having it all for free i bet more money would be going towards all the stuff you download but dont want to buy. even though 'you wernt going ot buy it anyway'.

i do like to watch movies and listen to music first before buying, but if i dont like it ill delete it, same goes for if i do like it ill buy it. win win situation IMO.
