laptop hard drive sent in post?

    hi

my brother found an 80gb laptop hdd at his work and has brought it home and i was wondering how much is it likely to cost to post? its a hitachi one so probably ok IF it works! seeing as it was found on its own out of a laptop makes me think its duff though but is it worth a chance for the cost of postage?

    thanks

I would think sending it via 'Recorded' delivery would cost <£5?
It goes on weight, and a 2.5" drive - wrapped in some bubble-wrap, and put in a suitable size jiffy envelope, won't weigh very much at all

Saying that, yesterday i had to send my phone back to O2. Wrapped it in bubble-wrap and wacked it into a padded envelope. Cost £5.05 for special delivery :<

Re: laptop hard drive sent in post?

    thanks guys, much appreciated.

my brothers sending it tomorrow - I will get a convertor so I can test it in my desktop as he has my old IDE laptop in the other end of the country and if it works I'll probably sell it for a few quid on ebay.

special delivery is more than recorded is it not?

Yes it is. But it's almost guaranteed to reach the recipient the next day, if that's important
If you're concerned about the cost... just ask the assistant in the PO to tell you the difference in price for Recorded vs RMSD

Are you meaning an internal converter?
It would be an idea to consider an external adapter/converter instead (IMO), so you can use it for any 2.5", 3.5", 5.25", IDE or SATA drive in future as well, without the hassle of installing/uninstalling it in a system?

I'm thinking something along the lines of the AC Ryan 'Udrive', +/or the Sharkoon 'DriveLink'?
There are many different (/cheaper) variants of the same type of product available on Amazon and Ebay too though

Re: laptop hard drive sent in post?

thanks very much that is very useful

I didnt even realise you could get an external convertor! All I know is that at college we had an internal one that connected the 2.5" HDD to molex and IDE and it wasnt obvious which way round it went, either fitted and obviously only the correct way worked.

I will get an external one and will have a look on ebay after the footie.

I had a look on ebay but didn't find anything so I googled it and found one of them on Scan. How many posts on these forums do you need to get free delivery and does it need to be over a certain price?

    Cheers
    Ben

    Read this sticky Ben

But... whilst I wouldn't want to take custom away from Scan... you might want to consider [much] cheaper alternatives?
For instance... this TeckNet VS408 costs <£10 delivered!
This Nexons USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Adaptor Kit costs <£11 delivered!

    As for...
