The first time I read the story, back before it had the video, I thought in my mind of this huge hulking drunkard, large and imposing, looking quite Neanderthal-like in the bin-bag, causing serious damage.

Then came the video, and I was stunned. Fairly weedy and non-imposing drunk fool caused cries of "Ow, that stung" and "That's going to leave a bruise!"

and had in his hand a crutch - which he did not need to walk as he was holding it in the air

Assault is assault. You can't put some magical minimum limit of damage onto the crime, as then this limit can simply be abused.

In this case, we had a group of people peacefully going about their hobby/beliefs, when all of a sudden there was a premeditated attack upon them. Nothing had been done to provoke it, and he clearly intended to injure (although the amount intended is debatable) and upset.

It actually puts a whole new perspective on schoolyard 'fun', really, doesn't it?

the rebel scum were training for a possible assault on the empire, as the video clearly shows. the attack was proactive and necessary to avoid greater loss of life on both sides in the future.
