Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Just won £100 in John Lewis vouchers for working 12 hour days for the last month and not seeing my son :(
So, bit of a mixed blessing.
Problem is, I don't know what to spend it on. Being a dad, the desire to spend money on myself has been totally sublimated. My wife insists I should treat myself (I offered her the vouchers to spend on herself). Could flog 'em, I suppose, and put the money aside.
OR... you, YES, YOU!, could suggest cool things to buy.
Front runners so far are: a painting or bed linen. They lack electronic components so, as a Hexus forum member, they're not terribly exciting to me. Any suggestions?

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Do John Lewis do good suits? Always handy to have one around, and if you really have trouble buying things for yourself, then wear it and take the wife out somewhere nice, so you can claim to yourself that it was for her :P
If you don't need to spend them right now (check for any use-by dates), then in all seriousness, put them aside for later family needs, and take in it's place the same amount from your family funds, and get something that really matters to you instead.

Second that! Some of the newer Lego sets are amazing and if your son is old enough, it can become a father/son joint project to assemble it.

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Third for the Lego, it's always fun :)... ahhhhh good times :)

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
£100 for that? That's a bit stingy. Still, better than nothing, which is what most employers would give you...
-
Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Really you deserve to treat yourself. If your wife has said that you best take the opportunity :)
Can the vouchers be used on johnlewis.com or only instores and at waitrose?
Might be worth getting some gadgetry? iPod / Wii ...

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Or thats 10% off a new HDTV! :-) Plus staff discount I suppose! :D

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
John Lewis do amazing bath towels. (The Egyptian cotton with the square detail ones).
-
Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Another bote for lots of lego, or something like an iPod, or maybe a new digital camera if you haven't already got one.
-
Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Yeah, it works in waitrose too.
We have those bath towels: they were on our wedding list ;)
No shortage of suits: lawyer :)
Lego a v v v good idea, coz I can also say it's for my son. Top one. Although the idea of paying 2/3 of a wii is also brilliant.
It's amusing: yesterday my boss gave me these for all the hard work, hitting targets, etc. Today she told me some of my files were sh1t. Go figure.
Edit: Son is two, by the way. More "Duplo" at the moment :)
Rosalina, you're also right and sensible to suggest putting aside for a while. Ah, me, a pleasant dilemma.

Bosses are like that though, your best is never good enough.

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Put aside just the vouchers, though, not the treating yourself! Everyone deserves treats! ;)
-
Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
put asside the vouchers?! they will expire, and deprechate vrs base.
nuts to that, lego!
half a wii is also a nice novelty, espesually if your the only one of your friends who has one (you don't really want one to play on your own, much better with friends).
could always accesorise, get a manbag and a new wallet! Or a money clip to keep the other vouchers in.
I've been told twice in the last week i need to accessorise apparently.

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
If the wife is letting you treat yourself take the opportunity and if you're very smart come back with something small for her and the kid. I'm sure they'll both love some lego :D
Everyone loves lego!

Until the choking incident. Don't buy Lego.

Choking is just one of the valuable lessons lego has to offer :)

Another vote for Lego here.

Ow, ow, ow. I felt that. Only a stage or two below treading on a plug... :surprised:

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Or, after some of the inquests I deal with, I could sink it on several bottles of scotch :(
-
Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Oh dear. :( In that case I would definitely apply the Sam rule of thumb for \'spare\' monies, which states that 50% = on sensible purchases* & the other 50% = on unjustified but cheering self up reasons.
* considered some sort of outdoor toy in hopes of good summer?
-
Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
I would definitely go with unjustifiable purchases for a treat!
One thing you could do is sell them on Ebay, sure you\'ll take a hit on their value, but you\'ll end up with cash instead....and then there are REAL possibilities!

Well given even a bottle of Laphroaig only costs about £25, there's still more than enough left over for the lego :)
Just don't try mixing the two, not only does lego taste terrible soaked in whiskey but the choking risk rises a great deal :)

Hmmm...
You can never buy TOO much Lego!

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Buy food from Waitrose, and use the money you would have spent on food, somewhere else, on whatever you want.

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Just been round John Lewis this morning. Was looking at pearls to replace a pearl necklace I bought my wife years ago. She came over and dragged me away, pointing out that they were fake ones (doh!).
Thomas the Tank Engine Duplo looked pretty cool for son, but he has about 12 miles of Tomy track already. Otherwise, a decent iPod speaker dock thing looked probably about the best bet.
Didn't spend them today, therefore. Holding back. The food suggestion is looking like a good one.
Edit: Or two and a half rolls of funky John Lewis wallpaper. HOW fvcking much??!??!?

*Ooops sorry, Not sure if you can get K'Nex in John Lewis.

Yup, but the two can co-exist in lego k'Nex - happiness, even swapsies. Tis true... I have seen this happen :D

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Buy a DS. £100 exactly!
Fun for all.
-
Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
Lego and Knex may be able to co-exist, but two forms of plastic building blocks that CANNOT co-exist are Lego and that cheap ass Spanish substitute from the late 80's, which had the same rought dimensions, but the holes were the wrong size. GAH! And it "felt" cheap and... well... Spanish.

Re: Woo hah! Help me spend my bonus
DS is way to go, would be very appreciated however games cost a lot.
Scalectrix?
