Best place to look for IT work?

    Hi

just came back from the job centre where I had a meeting with my DEA (disablity employment advisor) and she said I need to look further afield for work, does she mean different websites or moving house? I currently look on the Job Centre website and another website that has jobs which are based in Devon but there's rarely any IT work nearby, probably due to living in the sticks.

ive got a few low IT qualifcations and Im not sure if they would be enough to get my foot in the door of perhaps being an IT Technician - GNVQ Intermediate ICT, AVCE ICT & NVQ Level 2 in Computer Systems Support. To be able to get a job would I require more advanced qualifications than those? I have not learned anything from any course, just on the net.

    Thanks,
    Ben

That should be enough to get you a job, but possibly your location may be holding you back.

I know for a fact that even Portsmouth is difficult to get an IT job in...

try some of the other websites... jobserve, cwjobs and itjobboard for a start

jobserve has a couple... JSRC-HELP-DEV and JSRC-HEL-DEV are the references

Where in north devon are you? and has your CV been sanity checked recently?

Agree, i think she means that you need to be sourcing other places like Monster.co.uk and other job search sites, other than relying on the job centre which a lot of bigger companies dont really use.

Re: Best place to look for IT work?

Thanks very much for the replies - very useful

Yeah, when I was in Exeter taking the last course I mentioned they have a place on-site that helped people back into work called the Shaw Trust - they have checked and made additions to my CV, so hopefully thats upto scratch now.

I currently live in a place called Milton Damerel which is near Holsworthy right in the middle of nowhere, the furthest I can get to everyday (whilst living here) is a town called Barnstaple (which is still 25 miles away and a 45min drive at least)

I will check out the sites you have mentioned.

    Thanks again.

Re: Best place to look for IT work?

I know the Exeter/Plymouth/Barnstabe area quite well, and unfortunatly gotta say I even had trouble finding I.T jobs in plymouth, Exeter/Exmouth, and Barnstable area.

    The main sites that I used/still look at are ;

    www.monster.co.uk

    www.jobserve.com

    www.reed.co.uk (agency)

    www.cwjobs.co.uk

My advice stick your C.V on all of the above sites, to maximise the coverage you will get, hopefully you will get agencys calling you after they have seen your c.v on one of the sites listed.

I can also tell you that Pompy was a no-no for any general I.T technician jobs, the main places unfortunatly are London, Reading, Slough, Bracknell, Maidenhead, Basingstoke etc, basically on the M4/M3 corridor.

Have a look through some job sites, and Im gonna say rather than looking for an actual I.T company in your area you will probabily have more look finding work as an I.T tech in a school etc etc.

Re: Best place to look for IT work?

I'm new to this forum, but i feel I can offer a few words of experience when it comes to working in the SW region.

The golden rule is to not think that there are no IT jobs down this way, I have worked for over 15 years in Cornwall in IT.(and earnt excellent money)

It is as difficult to hire good IT professionals in the SW as find jobs in IT. Research the businesses in you're area, they all use IT to function these days and you will be surprised how desperate they are to find the right people in the local ares.

With a previous employer I used to handle new hires and most of the time aptitude was as important as experience, so write a CV and covering letter and send it out. don't rely on agencies as they only look for key words and don't understand talent.

I know all this from experience so give it a go it worked for me
