    police application form question

Q4 Police officers’ time is valuable and they need to manage their own time and work load effectively.
Think of an occasion when you were under a lot of pressure to do a number of jobs or tasks at the same time

i looked at the this question and thought that id use an example of workload at uni, but on re reading the question im not convinced that this would be suitable. plus i can well imagine this is what a lot people use.

i leaning more towards a work example, my concern is that my work example may be a little too complex. i work for bt and was thinking about using an example of when ive had to reconnect a customers line and then liase with all the diff engineering teams to get the line back on.

what about this one, not sure if i want to use it as the police dont always like doorman.
basically i work as a doorman and 3 years ago there was an incident where a young women had left the club. she was a little worse for wear and went to cross the road but as she crossed whe walked in front of car driving past. she was sent flying and was left with a deep head wound that was pouring blood.
i was first on the scene and to had to radio for assitence from other doorstaff, i asked them to keep people away and sent one a little further up the road to ensure that no other cars hit her. all i could really do was call an ambulance and compress my shirt over the head wound in vain hope to stop her losing too much blood.

my hesitency in using this is that i dont really wnt too push the fact i work as a doorman.

    what do you think

    cheers

i'd say uni was a good one. its called a compitency question, and they will look more at your thought process as you laid out the tasks and prioritised, rather than the situation/result itself.

humm.... not sure.... what area are you wanting to join within the police?

Although you dont like to promote the fact you are/were a doorman it does represent a very good hands on experience which could possibly happen if/when you join the police force.

yep i sort of agree, the problem is they want a specific example. and really theres very rarely a day were youve got multiple things to do that have to be prioratised. if i used it it would be a bit of an adlibbed answer

you need to prepare answers for this kinda stuff. its not unusual really to have different priorities - its just hard to think of them

perhaps christmas shopping, work and drinking with yer buddies.. something like that. think back to a time when you last thought 'christ ive had a busy day today' and think about that..

i would have used if this was me, an situation from my part time waitressing job before i started my training... in the middle of summer really busy country pub, lots of people wanting food and me working by myself. I was also used as a glass collecter, dish washer and waitress (yes i was abused!! it was a crap job ) so the chef would be calling food away, there would be people wanting to order, the girl on the bar would be calling for glasses, people would be wanting to pay, dishes would need washing, cutterly wrapped and i would have to do all this and stand on my head at the same time and remember to smile, not get stressed and not forget any customers

So i dont know if thats the kinda thing you are looking for, but that springs to mind as something i would use... cos there was a high amount of pressure on me and i did have to prioritise, people did have to wait sometimes, dishes did get stacked to the ceiling and the kitchen look like a bomb site.

I dont think there is anything wrong in useing your scenario from working as a doorman, u did something to help someone in quite a scary situation it wasnt u that pushed her into the road and your not talking about hurling a drunk, rowdy person halfway down the street and then half kicking them to death cos they pissed you off so how can that example be seen as a bad one?

you had to prioritise there, u had to remember to keep people away, u had to remember that it was important that she didnt lose anymore blood then practically possible and u also had to deal with her, keep her calm and make sure she was ok. And also looking after yourself, dealing with your own nerves and fears about the situation and remembering everything that i have mentioned above

Yeah i think that would be alright to use, good luck

May I ask which force you are applying to?

I answered this question on an MoD Police application form, but sadly at the moment they are only accepting transfers from other forces.

Personally I think you should use the doorman answer, it shows you can keep control in a crisis. Managing a uni workload doesn't really compare. Sadly due to the nature of my current employment I can't voice my answer on a public forum.

I agree with Teepee, seriously consider useing that doorman scenario you are going to be dealing with situations like that on a regular basis and need to have your head screwed on! uni workload is ok, but u can put that essay down and forget about it for a day or two, go and watch TV etc etc... you cant escape a situation when someone is lying in front of you, with the potential to die and its upto you to stop that from happening... so u need your wits about you and think about whats going on, whats more important? yours and hers safety - not being hit by further cars or people crowding round to see whats going, which do u attend to first?

cheers i really want to use the doorman scenario, im just concerned that the assesor will see the word doorman and that will be it. there is a massive stigma attatched to being a doorman and the police dont always like us. i personally am very proud to be a doorman ive have worked as a doorman for the last 5 years and consider the job a specialist job. if done properly, im not a thug and im not poorly educated. but that is what people think. im very much torn on which one too choose

If you dont put to much emphasis on throwing people out of clubs, and re-inforceing the stigma then i dont see that you have a problem. U should use that scenario and u should be proud of what u did to help that woman, not only did u have to deal with her, but did u also have to give a basic assessment of her condition to the paramedics when they arrived? Thats the kinda thing i would expect that you would be dealing with on a day to day basis, i cant see anyone kicking your application out and if they did then obviously they are very predjudiced and shouldnt be looking at applications

Go on use it, you know you want to and i want you to

From the Police i have come across, not one of them would have an answer to this. Even if they thought of one they would do it.

    The content is still relevant.

It's not as if it's a for sale thread or a redundant news item. Perfectly valid imho
