Help needed on income tax!
For the last two summers i worked as door supervisor (bouncer) at music festivals all over the UK. Now since i was a student (and still am until this september) i didn't think i had to pay any tax if my income was under £5k. Now i have just found some pay slips from the two summers i worked where i have paid national insurance. My tax code on them is NT which "Is used when no tax is to be taken from your income or pension".
So can someone who understands all this tax stuff help me out? Can i make a clam for that national insurance back?
Strange thing is when i was at uni i worked as a bouncer in the student union where my wage was not taxed at all.
Thanks for any help!
edit: my earnings fopr 2006 summer were £3047
Re: Help needed on income tax!
you pay national insurance, and your employer pays national insurance.
regardless of how much or how little you earn, once your over i think its £90 in a week, you pay it.
Remember this next time you vote, most of the tax rises brown n blair brought in where on the NI be it employers or employee contributions.
Its totally different to Income Tax.
Re: Help needed on income tax!
When i sorted out mine, from an Xmas temp job, i had about 300 owed to me in income tax. I'm not sure you get the national insurance back though. The best option is to go to your local tax office (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/enq/index.htm) and speak to the people there.
Just tell them that you think you've paid too much tax and you'd like to claim it back. Bring them your P45 if you have it and then they'll sort out the forms for you. As a rough guide, i sent mine off near the end of the tax year, after sending off a few more forms that they sent me in the post, i got all my tax back within 6 weeks. That was for income tax though, so be aware that you might not get your NICs back.

According to those two, you have to pay NIC's when you earn over about £100 a week.
Re: Help needed on income tax!
AHH that might explain it! While working in the student union the most i had a week was around £70 - £80.
Thanks for the links will have a read of them!

I actually read this thread to look for that comment :)
Anyone would think this goverment is the only one to ever charge income tax/NI.
Re: Help needed on income tax!
no but look at the most "hated" times of the tories.
Maggie basically said no, we'll do it my way, in an open and honest fashion. No attempt was made with the council tax to disciuse what it was.
