    Working through an agency

Hey all, well as the title suggests really.

Like a lot of University leavers, I threw my C.V on the Internet, places like Monster and Job Site.

To my surprise I have had a phone call about a possible interview for an ISP in Rochdale (ZEN maybe?).

Anyway, I was talking to a friend about the job and the rest like you do. He mentioned that when you get a job through an agency, the agency will take a small amount of your wage each month for six months, after which if the company keep you on, they stop taking money.

I was just wondering, how much truth there is in this, I have had a quick look at the company website but can't see anything on there.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Working through an agency

    he's wrong.

job agencies are paid a percentage of what the employer is paying (directly, NOT out of your pay packet) for hours-based work. they're given a flat-rate finders' fee (several thousand) for proper salaried jobs

yes thats how an agency makes money - for a perm position , they would usually charge 10% of the first years salary. Your employer pays it , not you.

    Re: Working through an agency

I had a telephone interview for that same job, back in January. However, I got stupidly nervous, forgot what a subnet mask was and stuttered my way through 20 minutes of telephone agony. Of course they didn't offer me a second interview.

That was my first telephone interview experience ever though.

    Re: Working through an agency

It depends if your contract of permie.

Permie's get an upfront finders fee once the person has passed probation. This in practice can be anywhere upto 50% of the annual wage, depending if its head hunting or just job finding.

The trick to remeber here is that the recuirter types have a budget for spending on drink + dancing whilst they're trying to woo you. The agency that found me for my current roll was allowed to squander £250 a night, because i'm not that easy i waited until the 3rd date before taking the interview, got 2 rather good meals out of it along the way

Contractors do have to pay a fee to the agency themself.

    Re: Working through an agency

If you are going to work through an agency, you'll be a contractor. First step is to read the contract before you sign it - that's the time to cross out any clauses you disagree with! Most agencies charge your employer a percentage of your salary, but that will be transparent to you, there should be no need to make a payment to the agency yourself.
Caution! - many contracts have big penalty clauses, usually in the small print, if you decide to cut out the agency and work directly for the employer.
Caution! - if you are paid gross, usually via a 'one-man and a dog' limited company, get an accountant to make sure that you put enough aside to pay PAYE and Tax.

You should be entitled to holiday pay if you are treated as an employee, but not if you're a self-employed contractor - http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/...oliday_pay.htm

    Re: Working through an agency

I don't think I have explained myself properly.

I was contacted by BD recruitment, they asked me some questions, told me about a job and asked if I wanted my C.V sending off, I said yes, that was it.

Waiting to here from the ISP, if they get back to me that is.

    Re: Working through an agency

    Thats what agencies do

they'll be pitching you for the job , in return , they'll get a finders fee from the company you work for.

most of the adverts on jobserve are through agencies - its rare to find any that are direct.

    Re: Working through an agency

I wouldn't work direct in any case. You have all the hassle of invoicing and waiting for the client to pay. Working through an agency I put my timesheet in and the agency pays me the following week. Then getting the money out of the company is their problem, not mine.
