Electronic Equipment that just won't die

At 02:00 this morning I thought I killed me XBox 360. I had it laying flat on top of my PC that has a Coolmaster case. Luckily, at the time my PC was off.

So I was playing GTA IV. I had been drinking black tea and there was still a bit in the cup that was cold. So sat at my desk with my headphones connected up to my TV/Monitor I felt hungry.
I looked to my right to my bed and spied a fruity loaf. Hmmm. I got up and reached for it pausing my game as I did.

The lead on my eadphones pulled taunt and knocked my cup over spilling tea everywhere. Most of it going on my XBox.
I squealed and reached manically for the power button and it switched off. Hoooooo.
I sat back down as I could see tea going in the Xbox 360's vents. I moped up the excess tea.
As I reached down to the mains I said to myself "Ah, that was clo....."
But before I could unplug it my XBox 360 turned itself on, opened the the DVD drive slightly then died.
I thought that was it. The mobo probably shorted out. I was disappointed there was no flashes of explosions so I tried turning it on but it was dead.

I tilted the XBox a bit and got a little bit of tea come out the vents. I used my hairdrier a bit and just left it. Luckily only a bit of tea got on my PC. It trickled down the side of the case and on the fans on the side of the case. I sorted that.

So, I get up at around 09:00 today. I plug in my XBox 360 and turn it on.
How it works fine I'll never know. It has been running GTA IV and Darkness fine. I can't believe it.

Have any of you had electrical equipment that just refused to die of came back from the dead?

Re: Electronic Equipment that just won't die

I left my 5 quid USB pen outside on the grass in the glorious Northern Ireland weather for a few days. It had rusted a bit but still managed to work. Sadly I've lost it now.

And points go to my Razer Diamondback and Zboard which are still going strong (although using a Saitek Eclipse 2 atm) for surviving 2 years of world of warcraft and many other anger inducing games.

Had the old mobile phone in the toilet job left to air out for a couple of days turned on and works. It all depends really you could quite of easily blown you XBOX unuasable but you seem to have been lucky.

Re: Electronic Equipment that just won't die

About 4 years ago, I had a whole lot of my electronics get rained on (!!) while I lived in a buddy's garage. Turned out that side of the roof leaked if the rain was blown a certain direction. Keep in mind this is a huge garage; one big open room about two stories tall; it used to be used to service tractors by a previous owner. Anyways, I had been watching a movie and when I got up to turn it off, I noticed that half of the top of my TV was soaked, the backs of the DVD player and VCR on the stand under it was a bit wet, my GameCube completely soaked (luckily, unlike the other components, it was off). All of this equipment was still being rained on while it was running! I quickly shut everything off (taking great care while doing so, as i was standing in a blasted puddle by then...), but was too tired (and the stuff too heavy) to move by myself. I unplugged *everything*, wiped everything off, and covered the tops of stuff with many, many layers of shirts and blankets (knowing well they might get ruined too as the rain was *still* coming down) and went to bed, fearing my nice electronics were as good as dead.

The next day when I awoke, I was surprised to see the shirts had kept my stuff from getting much (if any) wetter. With some effort, I moved everything to another part of the garage, re-hooked up everything, and crossed my fingers... Much to my surprise, everything still worked. I don't know how. ^_^

The only permanent damage was that the Open button on my GameCube sticks sometimes. Everything else worked like a charm. I still use that TV, VCR, and GameCube to this day (the DVD player got replaced when I got my new sound system a couple of years ago). The VCR is on its last legs though, as it sometimes eats tapes now, so its been pretty well retired for the last year or so.

I had a Creative MP3 player a couple of years back that went through a washing machine and still worked. (I did have to change the batteries though!)

Re: Electronic Equipment that just won't die

Managed to spill almost an entire 2 litre bottle of Irn-Bru into an open Playstation. Took it to bits, dried it, cleaned with cotton buds, left it for a couple of days... worked perfectly.

I also had a phone that survived various attempts on it's life I dropped it in numerous puddles, it fell out of my pocket while jogging, I dropped it down stairs, I dropped it in a sink. Worked fine. I fell down a banking, face first, one night (while slightly the worse for wear), had the phone in my chest pocket and it didn't get damaged in the slightest, even though my shirt was ripped. I eventually retired it, grudgingly, because it looked like crap, and was battered to hell. Still worked fine though!

Yes, I am a teeny bit clumsy...

Re: Electronic Equipment that just won't die

I have a Philips C399 hi-fi that i bought 8 years ago. Since then it has been well & truely used and abused. Been used pritty much everyday bar holidays & being away from home and i also use it most nights to fall asleep to using the sleep mode. Same with all university house parties we've held, it was always been used as the DJ & kept on nice n loud for several hours at a time without fault!

On a side note, the CD played is showing its age trying to find tracks & skipping a bit, the remote has also been dropped a few too many times and requires a selotape bandage to keep it going!

In a drunken stupor, I once peed all over my Denon amp and tape deck.

The amp never made it, but the tape deck was quite literally "right as rain" once richer sounds had cleaned all the "beer" out of it.

Re: Electronic Equipment that just won't die

I've managed to soak keyboards, mice and more besides with water/etc and not realised till I notice the residue left behind.

Full marks to my school's keyboard though... it got chucked out a window, jumped on (by some idiot) dosed in a toilet, then rescued by some well-meaning person and given back to the computer. It still works... somehow.

I presume it is the same one... the chipping on the side of it makes it pretty distinctive

Not quite as impressive but I've got an alarm clock that is still going strong with the same batteries for the last 12 YEARS! I think it's evolved into a self-sufficent lifeform.

Ah yes, awesome. That's something I've always wanted to do.

I mean pee on electrical equipment. When it's on, It was on wasn't it?
It's like my life long ambition. You know, pee on something electrical, make it spark and fizzle out and cause a blackout in my area. Obviously without dying or burning me todger off.

Is it possible to do this without dieing? Are there any techniques of doing this without dieing?

You think Clunk's indestructible tape deck is something? - check this out for resilient electrical equipment:

We've got an electric fence at the back of our garden - I pee on it every morning to wake me up. 15 years on and nothing but a few battery changes have been needed. They don't make them like they used to.
