    Sunset Yellow in Antibiotics... Why?!?!

I have just been given antibiotics for our little boy, who is only just over 1 year old, and was horrified to see that it contains the colouring Sunset Yellow!
It made me really angry, as I have tried my very hardest to avoid giving him any additives at all, and now I have to force feed him one of the worst additives for children! It even says on the bottle that the colouring may cause an allergic reaction, and obviously doesn't mention the hyperactivity issues with it and the fact that it isn't recommended for children.

I just don't understand the reasoning behind adding colourings to medicines - especially those that are not even sold and therefore don't need to look appealing.... and it doesn't even look nice anyway.

I really think there should be some sort of legislation to stop putting unnecessary additives into medicines.

    Grrr...

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.

Re: Sunset Yellow in Antibiotics... Why?!?!

I think the same stuff is in the antibiotics I'm on at the moment (and was last year when the below happened).

Bloody nightmare when you take them on holiday on a plane, and due to the pressure differences they all explode. The yellow stuff is an absolute git to get out of everything that happened to be in your washbag.

I don't understand the point either, as they are in a capsule rather than a film coated tablet, so you can't even see the stuff. Well, you can't until it has exploded everywhere.

Go back to your doctor and get him to prescribe your son something different. That is ridiculous, you're right. You should pass your more than annoyance onto your doctor, and maybe get him to pass it onto the manufacturer. Or do it yourself.

What does he need the antibiotics for?

I imagine the colouring situation is the same as making anti-freeze bright blue. There must be a logical reasoning behind it.

If it smells (ish) like banana, tastes (ish) like banana, then it's probably better off looking like banana rather than poo. Otherwise children might starting thinking it actually smells and tastes like...

You should go back to your pharmacist and ask for a generic product that doesn't contain the colouring.

Re: Sunset Yellow in Antibiotics... Why?!?!

Yep, it's the banana flavoured stuff!

I contacted Department of Health about it, and I can't fault the speed of their reply!

This is what they had to say:

"The use of colouring in medicines is not just for aesthetic reasons; it is permitted so that medicines can be more easily identified, especially in cases where a number of products are being taken simultaneously, or to mask unpleasant colours. Although reading the label and keeping the medicine in its original container is a safe way to ensure proper identification of a medicine, we recognise that some patients and their carers find the use of different colours in drugs can help prevent confusion.

The European system of 'E' numbers was established to help identify additives in food. The system includes both naturally occurring and synthetic additives which have been approved for use in food items because they are generally recognised as safe in the concentrations permitted. The legislation controlling medicines requires that all ingredients should have an acceptable level of safety. In addition, the only colouring additives permitted in medicines are those that have been approved for use in foods. In general, the amounts of these additives consumed from medicines are much smaller than the permitted levels in foods. Those permitted additives which are known occasionally to cause unwanted effects must be declared on the medicines labelling and a warning must be included in the accompanying patient leaflet."

Like they say, the colours make it easy to tell apart, and often help mask the taste, some of them can be utterly foul in their neat form.

    colours:
can be more easily identified - that makes no sense to me so do we only have a few medicines and stop making new one because we have run out of colours to give them?

to mask unpleasant colours - as an adult I dont care what my medicine looks like but I concede a child might not like the idea (May be the pharmacy should sell something like a mini chocolate fountain so parents can dip the medicine in it's uncolourful and nasting tasting form in chocolate before ramming it down the child's throat)

The 'E' numbers were suppose to be safe but there are a number that have since been band (I don't have the number but I'm under the impression it quite a few)
    eg
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_2G

If a food additive has a 'E' number associated with it do not assume it is safe - and do not assume it is unsafe, look it up

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunset_Yellow
Sunset Yellow is band in Norway and Finland, I'd try and get something else for your child if I were you.
