    Interesting Dilemma...

Not so much a thread asking for advice, more a thread to just let you know of the brilliant luck that I've just had...

I'm an Electrician, I work as an Electrician's Mate so I can gain practical experience, since I finished college a year and a half ago.

I've been working with agencies on sites all over London from wonderful places like the o2 Arena to Monument to not so well-known places like Ruislip.

In between jobs I can spend anywhere between one to eight weeks out of work and as such its not ideal for when I move out into the real world so I've recently endeavoured to get work in a firm for a permanent position.

A week before I finished my last job I booked a holiday for the 21st of July to the 26th with my missus in the view that I had three weeks to get more work at which point there would only be a week left before I jet off out of here on holiday.

Here lies the dilemma, the company I applied to, the owner lives about ten minutes from me so I typed out a covering letter and I printed out my CV and delivered it to him by hand hoping to get a response within days of receiving my letter, this was one day after the week I finished my previous job so this left two weeks for a response.

However, I received no response from the firm not even a phone call to confirm receipt of my letter and that they were interested in my application so I quite reasonably presumed that they weren't interested.

But today however, I receive a call from a lady who happens to be the secretary of the firm, telling me I have an interview arranged for this Thursday which is mere days before my holiday, I'm pretty sure it will work severly against me but I'm good at interviews and I have very good speechcraft but I'm just dreading my balls off as I really, REALLY need this job but I can't cancel the holiday as I won't get much of my moolah refunded this close to the day I'm travelling.

The owner AND co-owner of the company will be interviewing me so the impression I'm getting is that their taking me on or not is on a knife edge but I'm sure I can convince them to take me on dispite the fact I won't be able to work for them until a week later...

    I'm just dreading it man

    Wish me luck people!

Why will being close to your holiday work against you at interview?

    Good luck....

Nah, if it's skilled work, there's no reason they won't wait - assuming you're good enough of course. Don't forget, most people have a 4 week notice period...

    Re: Interesting Dilemma...

Just let them know about your holiday as Monkeyboy says. As for the interview and being nervous this is quite natural unless you have done lots of interviews. It sounds like you have a good amount of experience so you shouldn't have any problems with the technical side of things. Just be yourself, there really isn't an awful lot you can do if it's a company that doesn't have a huge amount of information to gen up on before you go. Be presentable, on time, smile at the person(s) who greet you and shake their hand(s), a good first impression will go a surprisingly long way.

Good luck and have a relaxing, enjoyable holiday.

P.S. Don't think about how it went whilst on holiday, it will be over by then and there's no point fretting about something you can't control. You might get a pleasant surprise waiting on the doormat when you come back.

Eek! Okay, I'm sure it'll go well, but I'm just really bothered about the hole holiday bit, many people in the industry are saying its a bad thing but they're referring to sub-constracting which they'd be right about but yeah...

Thanks all, feeling better about it now

Yeah, as others have said, don't worry about your hols.

If you're good enough, they'll be keen to take you on, regardless of having to wait a week or two.

    Good luck!

I'm setting myself up for the interview, I know what will likely be my weaknesses, I know how to turn them into positives so I should be fine
