    Deading Yourself In The Head.

Following on from the cheesewire suicide stuff and the bloke who loped his 'ead off with a chainsaw.

Suicide... do you think its possible for someone to top themselves without the balance of their mind being disturbed?

For me its a completely alien thing to do. People will do anything to survive, even live in Germany if thats what it takes. Plus how does anyone ever have enough balls? I wouldn'teven shave with a cut throat razor.

It seems so tragic because I don't see how someone could calmly and rationally decided to do it, let alone go through with it, so its sort of a pretty final bout of mental illness, wouldn't you say?

I mean, whatever it is thats got you to that stuation, whatever it is, are you telling me that in, say, 50 years, you wouldn't have got over it, or learned to live with it?

Being dead is pretty final, wouldn't you say? No chance to change your mind.

How many people who did it would reverse it given the chance?

Scary thought that people do it. Scares me anyway. Just seems so wrong.

I mean, even if you aint got owt to live for... put the telly on!

Noone here could, could they? Not even think about it? For a second?

    Live long everyone.

Re: Deading Yourself In The Head.

I guess it depends what your definition of disturbed balance of mind is - fully a quarter of adults suffer from some kind of mental condition at some point, and many stages in life have hormonal changes which affect mental state to some extent. So perhaps it's a little harder to come up with what is a 'normal' mental state to be able to compare it with.

Suicide is frighteningly common, espeically among young males - a group that traditionally doesn't suffer as much from depression as other demographics... but maybe the higher suicide rate is partly caused by an unwillingness to get diagnosed/treatment so skews the figures.

I couldn't either, it's in us to survive I suppose. People don't mind killing themselves slowly though

Hehe, true, sort of points out a weakness in my peeps will do anything to survive idea... like smoking ciggies and drinking beer until their liver implodes.

Very good point. We will knowingly kill ourselves slowly.

Kaniel, the reason I say it would seem almost impossible to do without some sort of disturbance is because of my other point - having the balls to go through with it. I think 'bravery' like that can only come if you are not 100% coldly and calmy aware of what you are doing.

Who could put a rope around their neck and pull the trigger? Or put a hosepipe on the exhaust of a car and jump?

People can say they'd do it, but they probably couldn't go through with it as it nears. But people that say they could and really could do it, we'd never know until they've done it.

    So...

    Who thinks they can?

    *Don't do it...*

Simple answer. It seems to be the only way out of your misery. I had a friend who suffered a long illness that meant he could barely walk, with constant pain, in the end it just got too much for him and he took his own life. The pain suffered by his friends and family is not something that would have bothered him too much.

Yes i do believe that you have to have some form of mental illness to take your own life. Having suffered depression it can be all too easy to think of ways to ease your own suffering. I pushed my friends away, i saw no way out, but one event at work showed me that i needed help. I got into counselling which saw me pouring my heart out, and it certainly helped.

As for your last question, could you? 2 years ago i would have said yes.

My first bout of depression happened when i was 18, at the time everyone would say, your too young to be depressed. No one would take you seriously. Today its noted that this is not the case, and you now have access to counsellors even in schools. But it is still young males that seem to be taking their own lives.

Nope. Balls not big enough. I like being around to know whats happening too much. And ,I'm glad to say, no reason to consider it.

Not that I'm making light of the whole thing, just in my mind I find it amazing that anyone, ever, has gone through with it. Its like the exact opposite of what all living things are programmed to do.

Human condition I suppose... animals don't do it.

I get your point, but I think even mentally sound humans are capable of the most astounding feats if the situation calls for it. Maybe all the heroes of the war were mentally unsound, but I doubt it.
