Mice will dead in 3 to 5.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7508842.stm
A Gartner analyst predicts the demise of the computer mouse in the next three to five years.

Taking over will be so called gestural computer mechanisms like touch screens and facial recognition devices.
    Really!?

Can't see that happening myself, anyone who's ever tried to surf the net on a tablet PC will have to admit its quicker to use a track pad, nipple, or better yet, a mouse...

    stupid researchers.

That's only because everything's designed for use via a mouse at the moment.

If you could start exactly the program you want with a simple voice command, have smooth multiple-point touch selection and variable control (pressure etc.) and programs designed around that then the most common PC tasks would be far easier and quicker to carry out.

    Dream on.

Touch screens have their uses, for sure. but as a general replacement for a mouse? Not here, it won't.

The mouse is small, simple, generally highly reliable and very cheap. And touch screens? Yeah, right.

I think it's a matter of getting used to it. If you could learn how to use a tablet PC as quickly and as easily as you use a mouse it would probably be about the same speed, possibly quicker.

EDIT: Oh yeah.. forgot about cost. That will slow down conversions for a few years or so.

Well, to some degree it depends on the touch screen, but I've used a lot of the touch-screen supermarket checkout screens (for the likes of Sainsbury and Waitrose) and they're far from being easier. The hand movement involved is far more extensive, the motion exaggerated and the arm-ache much, MUCH larger, IMHO. Swap my mouse for that? Hell will freeze over and become a Butlins winter ski resort first.

Not to mention the seating arangement for a touch screen.. I would find that uncomfortable at the least.

Think I'll stick with my mouse

Those facial movement things look stupid, think OCZ has one out already. Would look like an idiot trying to play something like a first person shooter with one of those, like your trialing for a gurning tournament.

Good point. It's the whole ergonomics. Having your arm low down, resting on the desk or a hand rest, and moving a mouse a few inches is far easier than extended periods holding you arm out to touch a screen. Seating is part of that whole thing.

Personally, I just don't see it, not for mainstream PCs and not for home machines. I can't see what the driving force would be. Touch screen is fine for certain purposes, but unless they come up with a vast improvement in technology, and at a price comparable with mice, I don't see it having broad appeal and it certainly doesn't to me. I'm comfortable with a mouse. It feels intuitive, like part of my hand. I don't really have to think about using it, it's a subconscious thing .... my mind decides what I want to do and my hand does it without conscious effort. I just don't see that, personally, with touch screen.

Not reliably. You've nearly always had to say something like 'start, programs, cancel, start, programs, Atari, cancel, start, programs, Atari, Test Drive Unlimited, Test Drive Unlimited' and it'd still end up making tea instead. Even if we're now at the point that the OS lets us start things up without us pre-creating shortcuts and so on, it's not intuitive to browse the web by voice at the moment.

That's really not the generation of products that is being talked about here though. This is probably an evolution of the sensor bar arrangement, rather than any conductivity changes - it's already cheaper, more sensitive and able to take multiple continuous inputs. In 5 years time it'll probably add no more to the cost of a monitor than built-in speakers do today.

Totally disagree. The use is very specific, but for lecture notes its brilliant. I've had two tablet PCs, and found them to be a brilliant device throughout uni.

That said, your arm is not transparent, even if you are a protien dodging veggie, and as such most anoying compared to a mouse.
