    Pub Quiz Question...

How many Dimensions does a cube take up?

I heard that there was a pub quiz in which a master of physics was arguing with a bunch of teachers over this question... i agree with the master of phyics...

    whats your take?

i will divulge the answers given by the teachers and that of the Master of Physics later on in the thread...

    Re: Pub Quiz Question...

no, a physical cube, not drawn, like for instance, a dice or a box... something you can hold.

    Re: Pub Quiz Question...

it exists on x y and z azis - depends if you subscribe to the whole 4th dimensional thing.
If it was made of a degradable sustance , you'd see how it changes over time.

    Re: Pub Quiz Question...

if it was moving it would still be within the 3 dimensions of space

the 4th dimension is time - it's there and it's still there... yep, still there...

    4?

    Re: Pub Quiz Question...

haha, spot on James... same answer as the Master Of Physics...

the 4th dimension is infact time, without time, the object would seize to exist.

the teachers however said that the object only exsists within the 3 dimensions...

    Re: Pub Quiz Question...

I have always thought of time as the 4th dimension, just wasn't sure whether it was "official" or not. Are they not trying to solve the Theory of Everything with 11 dimensions now or something?

    Re: Pub Quiz Question...

But if it exists in 4 dimensions then it's not a cube.

    It's a hypercube...

Physicists just add extra dimensions out of spite, as soon as anyone comes close to understanding what they're on about they throw in a new dimension or two to make it all complicated again.

If it exists in 4 spatial dimensions it's a hypercube/tesseract, but a standard cube exists in three spatial and one temporal dimension, thus four in total.

I heard about that 10 (or more) dimensions thing, got me thinking there might be a God and he/she/it just likes messing with the human mind for there own entertainment. Bit like a human owning a stupid dog and been entertained when it does something stupid.

    Re: Pub Quiz Question...

It exists in four, the figures like 26 dimensions/11 dimensions, are only required to rationalise the decidedly complex physics which deals with events fractions of a second after the big bang.
