    Jupiter is out tonight

Right now from where I am in SE London, if you look pretty much due south, about 25-30 degrees above the horizon is Jupiter.

If you train a pair of binoculars on it you should be able to see at least four of its moons. I daresay if you have a tripod and less light polution than we have in the metropolis() then you might get an even better view. Either way, I recommend it.

Edit to say- with 10x binos it appears very clearly as a disc, rather than just a dot.

    Re: Jupiter is out tonight

My PocketPC is showing Jupiter as being 15deg off the horizon. Being surrounded by all these terraces means I can't even see 45deg above though!

    Stargazing sucks where I'm at...

    mmm Jupiter

You'll need a good pair of binoculars to see the moons, tried looking at it with a pair that claims to do 30x about a month back and couldn't see them. Then we set up my brothers telescope definately worth a look if you get the chance.

It may well be 15 degrees, I was only estimating.

A 30x pair of binoculars would be impossible to hold still without a tripod, and would be very dim unless they had massive objective lenses. A few years ago I clearly saw four moons with a pair of 10x25s; I don't think tonight is an unusually good night for Jupiter viewing, but I could clearly see four moons with a pair of 10x50s; I've just had another look and can still see two or three. I really need to buy a tripod mount for my binos though, as I don't have any kind of convenient rest for them; nor do I have especially stable hands.

Sounds like it was the lense size then, the're a compact pair so they don't let a lot of light in at 30x.
