Recommend a good lightweight tent under £100?

Got a new ultralight sleeping bag for my birthday, and it occured to me that i don't actually have a decent tent - yeah it's currently a cheap job from Blacks, but it won't really hold up to anything serious.

I've been looking at Vango, since they've got a good track record, most people say they're built well and for the most part they're priced competitively. At the moment, the Banshee looks like quite a good option. It's enough for two people, it's pretty damn light, inner and flysheet, etc. The other option from Vango is the Spectre 200. It's slightly heavier, but quite a bit larger by the looks of it - so whether having a decent sized porch is worth it i dunno - the price is almost exactly the same by the way.

As you can see, prices are the same, but there are also other ones like the Tempest which is a bit more expensive.

    So. Recommendations?

Specs need to be: Light - under 2.5-3kg, small pack-up, durable, good severe rain performance, inner and fly - NOT single sheet.

    Cheers!

2 will be cosy indeed in a tent that size - I'd suggest using it for just you unless you have to.

You can find cheaper sites than that also: a very brief google turned up: http://www.springfield-camping.co.uk...hee+200+2008/p at £10 cheaper.

I'd suggest the spectre over the banshee unless you really need to keep weight (and cost) down. It's a bit bigger, so will be more comfortable, especially with 2 people in. It pitches as one so won't get wet inside when pitched in the rain.

Yeah the spectre does sound like a good option.

Sorry when i said it'll fit two, i'll probably be using it for myself the vast majority of the time, but it's still an option at any rate (and it being a bit cosy is never a bad thing ).

The only issue with the Spectre is that it packs up (in straight volume terms) almost 50% more than the Banshee. So i'm going to have a look at how small i actually want it to pack up Since an extra 10cm on the end could mean the difference between it in my bag and not!

I am a big fan of terra nova tents, and have used my quasar in very cold and very windy conditions, I also have a mate that does month long expeditions to remote areas of Sweden that got me on to them. They have a history of keeping spares for years, and you can also get upgrades. Just looked and this
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Terra-Nova-Sol...3286.m14.l1318
could be worth a look, think they are around 1.8Kg. Prefereance would be to find one local so you could see it pitched, and save on postage.

As has already been said, 2 men tents really aren't for 2 men at all, in fact, I'd say with current sizes, 4 man at least if you plan to live semi-comfortably.

for the love of god, never ever use tentastic, they're the dodgiest, least-organised most ignorant bunch i've ever had the misfortune to deal with (took nearly 2 months for a refund on a leaky tent)

I can't really advise on branding much, but perhaps visit a 'tent' showroom, have a look around at the sizes, see which suits your purpose the best and take it from there

Re: Recommend a good lightweight tent under £100?

Well my philosophy is get 1 more berth than you need. So for 2 people, 3 man tents, etc which has worked so far. But if i'm going camping with friends everyone is no doubt going to bring their own tent, so a 2 man should do fine. The ability to bring a pack into the tent if it's really nasty weather (as opposed to in the porch on a groundsheet/rain-cover) is quite handy.

I mean unpacked size isn't really an issue, with the size i'm looking at it's not going to be an issue at all for campsites, and if it's wilderness camping, then it's a matter of finding more room. Packed size and weight are the key bits, so taking up the least space in a rucksack is preferable.

Terra-Nova area also seem pretty good, and if i was considering upping the budget a bit, there's a Helium 100/200 series (also Vango) at around 150.

Get a parachute and prop it up with sticks - preferably used, it'll likely be cheaper then

And you can use any spare £££ on making it waterproof

If it's being sold as 'used' then chances are it will have quite a few holes and tears in it.
