Re: Russian tanks enter South Ossetia

And while the US, EU, NATO and the RAC all can appeal for calm and an end to the violence, there will be no troops steaming in to quell the unrest, because that way MADness lies.

The problem with international politics in the modern age is the major groups can't really do anything to stop the other major groups doing what they want, beyond moaning a bit at the UN. Ooooh, the UN, scary.

The US, EU, Russia, and China can do what they want really. What are the others going to do? Start WWIII?

The Americans do as they please because they have more missiles than everyone else and are cowboys, the EU has a higher GDP than even the US, has several nuclear armed states and thinks anyone who lives outside western Europe is either a savage or of no importance. Russia and China have chips on their shoulders the size of their countries, have nukes, a large army, and national pride is all.

So we eye each other from a distance, voting and vetoing in the UN, while nothing really gets done, because neither group can really push the other around. We can't even agree completely on how to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons, so its unlikely the Georgian army can be saved from this situation.

If you have a half way decent economy, a few nukes, and a permanent seat on the UN security council (France, Britain, USA, China, Russia) you can pretty much do as you please, so long as you don't step on the toes of any of the other members. So, alas, the Russians can go into Georgia, as the USA and Britain went into Iraq, and nothing can be done.

The call to arms you mean?

I thought it was an interesting post... slightly dramatic for the General Discussion section of a tech forum, maybe, but still interesting.

Rebels? There a nation in there own right and a well equipped army. Oh and they killed atleast 12 Russian peace keepers which is what kicked it off.

Re: Russian tanks enter South Ossetia

To be honest i think both sides have a right to be doing what they are doing so im not going to get on my high horse and pick a side. However i totally agree with Stewarts post which is that no one can stop this only Russia themselves, as the other major powers will not dare get involved. If they did it would strike World War Three. Does anyone remember how WW1 started? It Was like a line of dominoes. One event leads to another and it began over a border conflict ......

That's not confirmed at all, what is known is that the Russians bombed an arms dump in the middle of a town (dumb place to put it) and the exploding munitions caused high casualties in the surrounding areas.

What is it with people joining sites purely to post unconfirmed propaganda at times like this?

What we know is that those deaths occured in the area that Russia was bombing and shelling, coincidence?
We also know that Russia has been angry at Georgia for wanting to join Nato and has taking this oportunity to vent it's anger.

The only Crazy ones here are the Russians, ever wonder why nobodys supporting them? Even old allies are denouncing Russia. Could it be that the've waded in with big feet where it was niether needed or wanted and vastly out of proportion?
And Yes, our press is free, where else in the world other than the states and western europe do you see as much critisism of the ruling government? certainly not Russia, they'd be arrested and tried for treason.

And Geogian Bombs? they have like 7 combat aircraft.

    Georgians bombed Gori?

Don't get me wrong, I know the Georgians started this, but I don't believe any casualty figures from either side or from there respective internet fan boys. Russia are not renowned for there care for civilians deaths either, just look at Grozny, they flattened that city and did not really accomplish anything military either.

I think that figure is now about 4 or 5. Not sure exactly what bought them down, but I've seen pictures of South Osettians armed with manpads, so there hardly defenceless.
