    Large Hadron Collider

I don't know if any of you have seen this, CERN's Large Hadron Collider, but if you haven't, you should.

Can you imagine the sense of pride the people who worked on this will have? Unless it creates a black hole that eats the Earth, of course.

I'm sure we've already gone into discussion about the cascade resonance that's going to happen when they turn it on.....

That's the one... I couldn't remember name, and searching through every reference on ten dozen threads didn't really appeal to me.

They already have turned it on .... depending on what you mean by that. First protons have already been injected, but it was a brief short-distance test of clockwise beam injection. Or so I'm told, anyway.

As I understand it, "turning it on" consists of a pretty lengthy test of a large number of systems. Getting it to the point where they're doing experiments where actual science is done is a way off yet, and getting results (unless the Earth implodes or we vanish into a black hole or something) is some way after that.

    Re: Large Hadron Collider

As it happens I was on shift today for one of the CMS detector's cosmic runs. No beam yet, as Saracen says - I is scheduled to be switched on properly (i.e. beam collisions) on the 10th of September.

I went down below ground again to have a look around. Some genius has mocked up a break-glass fire-alarm thingy with "Break glass in case of black hole" written above it. Awesome.

Right next to it, you should rig up a crowbar in a break glass box...
