I thought I read something at the till in Marks that said the money they were raising from the 5p charge was donated to an environmental charity - not sure it stated who though.

Lay off the shop assistants mate
As if it isnt enough of a soul destroying, degrading job as it is, there is now the added bonus of dealing with even more tutting from the terminally ignorant. A small minority of people this may be but dealing with this attitude is disheartening at the best of times.

If they seem annoyed, its because they have yet another tedious question that they must ask EVERY customer (hundreds per shift, as i am sure you can appreciate). Imagine having to ask several hundred strangers:
Do you need lottery?
Would you like some sweets or mints, or a terry's chocolate orange or whatever other product is on promotion
Do you need any stamps etc etc
And now... Do you need a bag
A question which is more often than not met with an inaudible mumble (causing further delay) or a complaint and occasionally, an outraged response from someone who feels the need to belittle assistant at the top of their voice.
5p!!!???!? OMG! If you are that bothered then shop elsewhere. And if its the principle (yeah, keep telling yourself that ) then register you're disgust with someone who gives a damn and/or can actually do something about it.
This rant isn't targeted at anyone here by the way, rather the attitude of an ignorant minority
I personally find it ridiculous that amidst all the little gestures supermarkets are making, they still have gigantic aisles of open fridges and freezers.
The M&S in Bristol is a good example - the whole chiller aisle is itself freezing cold - tell me that's not an epic waste of energy. And my local Somerfield is chilled the whole way through, I swear. Everything is cold to the touch; it's ridiculous.
Usually (9/10) I would remember to tell the shop assistant that I do not need a bag if I can carry everything (sometime even if I need to stack the products and carry with two hands). I normally keep the plastic bags for rubbish in the bedrooms and such. I must say that I tend to collect the plastic bags much faster than I use them, but the problem is that I often do my shopping on a whim before I go home so I don't get to take a few with me.
charging for poly bags is the same as hotels saying " we dont wash or change the sheets or towels if you dont use them, so please leave the unused ones to this side and the used ones to that side"
It's to save dough....or make it.... they dont care about the environment because if they did the rooms wouldnt all be at 25'C or more, needing the windows open even in winter,
Ditto bags.
We can now CHARGE for something we spend loads of money on. Result.
Skii nailed it. If they gave a damn, they'd let us bring back all the wrappings that the food comes in, as per Germany, Switzerland etc. and force them back upon the manufacturers. That'd nail the problem and I for one WOULD take it all back
With pleasure.
