Lynx is old, very old, and it was based on a text browser that was much older. So, it was *really* yesterday, and the "tomorrow's technology" bit is the simple answer to ads, popups, and flash and all the other net uglies.
negative marketing issues...
People expect "tommorrows technology today" so even if it reads "todays technology tommorrow" they still read the first one.
I did a course on it at some point.. Admittedly I spent most of the time on the course getting beaten at Halo by the very nice tech guys that had enough copies spare for me and a few others to play them, but I picked up a few things. One thing. That thing to be precise

You could of at least mentioned it's actual uses. Like reading documentation on xorg when you've somehow mucked up your X configuration for instance.
