    Prof responds to LHC fears

Such is the angst that the American Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has even had death threats, said Prof Brian Cox of Manchester University, adding: "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish."

    Fantastic quote.

I hope that's not a misquote, because that is truly brilliant

I noticed a headline in a colleague's Daily Mail yesterday that said "ARE WE ALL GOING TO DIE NEXT WEDNESDAY?"

    *sigh*

I hope they don't back down, I really, really do.

Re: Prof responds to LHC fears

I saw the daily mail article actually. It was pretty fairly written like most of the papers articles.. just with a slightly alarming title lol

At least one stupid comment for the article online though

"It's not really worth the risk, is it? I couldn't care less about probing the atom all that much. At least they could have the decency to turn it on in a hundred years or so, well after I'm out of here."

So by that reckoning.. this man is a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish at the very least

Trust it to be a Manc Professor to be straight-talking and say it how it is

I wholeheartedly agree with him. If we all listened to the people reporting doom and gloom then we wouldn't have made the technological and scientific breakthroughs that we have today.

Surround it with illegal immigrants, it's the only language they understand! My Kent semi is now worth £300000 less than my Bucks weekend cottage because it's that much closer to those wine loving French! And what has Brown done about it? Nothing. Even my maid and the gardener are worried, at least I think they are. If this isn;t stopped the price of petrol will go even higher and Crasinda will have to take the children to school as the au pair says she can't afford the fuel.. well, we think that's what she says as she's Polish and apart from spouting Eastern Bloc gibberish she just sits in her attic crying every night.

Gah, my mother even asked me if I thought that the LHC would bring about the end of the world. I just told her "probably" and had a good laugh.

Re: Prof responds to LHC fears

I doubt it's a missquote, Brian Cox is pretty rock and roll as far as Particle Physicists go.

    http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/b...rcollider.html

Can't wait for the LHC to switch on. Either we'll have a new understanding of our cosmology, the world will end - or better still - the LHC won't detect the Higgs Boson and scientists will have to admit that the last 50 years of physics is wrong!

Seriously though, you have to marvel at the scale and complexity of the thing. Amazing.

TBH I'm more worried about what the PEOPLE do when they read these articles! There will be a mass riot!

I'm going to stay inside and have a nice cup of tea I think.

    It may be my last...

Edit: Am I right in thinking that this could have some serious religious consequences if it works?
    With love and many thanks,

If what works? The LHC or the deathidemic?

If the former... then yes, because science is evil and God's/Allah's/The FSM's/whoever's followers will smite us all down.

If the latter... then yes, aforementioned deity has killed us all for not being rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish
