    The origin of "First"

    I read quite a few forums and blogs daily.
    Why is it that all the comments and first replies to posts contain only "First reply" with nothing of value whatsoever?
    Where did this idea come from?
    Do they think it makes them super-cool to be the first to respond, even though they probably haven't even read the full post?
    *sigh*

    Actually, for some reason I have no idea why, I went back to the earliest threads in GD, and read a few, noticing that members were spamming all sorts (mainly to get avatars back, I guess). Maybe a distantly related thing? Saying 'Yay first reply' to show they have fast clicky fingers. I dunno, but it's an interesting thought, no?

    (would've said it myself, as I'm sure that was the the idea, see if anyone would... but I reckon I'll have been beat anyway )

    EDIT: Blimey! Only a few replies in the gap! Guess I need to up my wpm

    Re: The origin of "First"

    If it doesn't come from 4chan, I'll be surprised.

    It's certainly existed on Slashdot way back when I started reading it. Still, when I eventually signed up to /. I got a 6-digit UID... which makes me better than anyone with a 7+ digit UID. My ID's not prime, though.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Nah, changing the timestamps of posts in the database... now THAT would be abuse of powers.

    But it's 11.30pm, I'm tired, and I fear I'll bring the site down if I try.

    Yeah, except directhex's UID is 636638, which is 117522 lower than mine. And so close to being a palindrome... damn, just missed out there hex, eh?

    Assuming I've located the directhex, and not some imposter.

    Are yous sure you're the Steve that went to the Bristol meet? I didn't think people our age (i.e., still students) were ALLOWED to be THAT clever

    Seems to me you've got brains on your brains

    Who doesn't like being first for anything? Its just a silly fad. Now if you will excuse me, I have to be 'first' to use the bathroom ...

    Ah yes, of course... that competitive streak that seems to be bred into the vast majority of people - competition: football leagues, post counts, games scores/leaderboards, exam results, social hierarchy, workplace hierarchy, you name it.
