Seriously, if you've got time and pictures of the jewelry, make little post card size print outs with the pictures of it, and contact details for you, plenty of the local shops would take heed of them.

What do you have on it which connects to the net automatically?
Gmail notifier (there is an IP notification thing now in Gmail).
Email checker (my provider says something like "mail lock failed, previous login=ip here")
Any software which has your name/serial attached to it when it updates - perhaps the developers might oblige with the connecting IPs.
Member of any private torrent sites? If your torrent app starts automatically, the admins could link your passkey to an IP.
Basically think of any way the laptop connects to the 'net, and figure out ways of getting the IP.
driving license was because before the police forensics team got here all I could do was quickly go through my belongings/room with rubber gloves and see if anything big had gone, I'd forgotten I'd put it away so panicked!
Phone was because I needed to call the different companies explaining non payment of bills.
The rest was just some panic thinking during the drive home at rush hour (stuck in traffic not moving, can't really think of anything else.)
And no I don't work for CIA, instead its an electrical retailer who sells quite a few computer things, one recent new addition being a keylogger kinda thing!
It comes with quite a few Toshiba branded software, only problem being that since its recovery I don't think I've registered it! (although Toshiba know about it.)
On the topic of IP logging, some micorsoft updates check your genuine thing of the OS, surely if I report the windows vista key to MS, they can provide a IP address to the police of where it was attempted?!
Clever thinking, needs more of these ideas guys (continue bringing them on!)
the update stuff doesn't post you real cd-key every time you do an update.....
But i think its time us hexites make something to help with such laptop theft.
But I thought that the genuine advantage web broswer tool checks CD-Keys for known piracted ones before declining or accepting the download....
If so linking onto an idea before by checking this, a IP address can be traced and with the help of the police find out where the people live/have been and widen the search so to say!
I figure the community of hexus can help with this problem!

Say googdbye to your bits and bobs mate. Probably far away by now etc etc.
I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to you.
My only input is have you got things stored on your laptop, i.e.
* remember passwords for websites, i.e. banking, online shopping sites etc.
* email accounts registered in outloook/alternative email program that has stored your password for quick email sending/receiving
Basically, I would advise you to change passwords on your accounts, email accounts, shopping accounts etc if you still have access to them & if you have any sensitive details stored such as banking stuff then at least consider cancelling that account(s).
:( Sorry to hear this, you may find your laptop but the cash and jewellery could be well gone. My brother was robbed heavily once, lost a hell of lot of cash and jewellery, luckily he had insurance, do you have insurance?
I tell you nothing is worse then some **** thief scrummaging through my belongings.
Just out of curiosity, how was your house robbed, did they break down the front door, or go in through open window, etc?
Good luck
My passwords have been changed for my emails etc, but it figuring which and what online shops I use that the problem.
I guess what I\'m gonna have to do is cancel / close all my banks accounts and simply open a new one.
Tell your bank your cards have been stolen and ask them to re-issue you with a new bank account number. I\'m sure they\'ll do it as it will make life easier for both of you.
It guarantees them that you\'re staying there and not considering a bank account elsewhere, and it should keep the new account linked to you so any future borrowing considerations will have your history behind them.
