    Unhappy LHC Magnet Failure

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7626256.stm

Looks like there was a helium leak and the magnets were heated up by up to 100C. I like how they called the fire brigade - the magnets might have reached a toasty -171C, easily enough to start a fire I'm sure.

Also don't watch the video in that link. That has to be the most boring clip they could possibly dig out for the story.

Where's that person that works there? What's going on? How bad is it looking really?

When are you going to get round to creating black holes?

Ooo sheet bet that was interesting to watch, helium quenches tend to be quiet exciting, and rather lively if unexpected. Only seen one NMR quench at that was on a little 400 mhz model, bit like this
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nY3bgZY_nF4
its controlled and the extraction has been ramped up, oxygen alrm doesent go off until right at the end.

Labs that have kit in that might quench normally have a big red button to hit by the door as you run away, it spins the extraction up so anybody thats trapped can avoid suffocation. Main thing to avoid is hitting a fire alarm, because that shuts the extraction down.

Current outlook is 2 months delay minimum!

A tonne of helium is a LOT - that's a lot of volume too

Asphyxiation by cryogenics is a surprisingly common source of industrial and academic death, most I heard of was 4 in one room, and that was one at a time. Each person spotted a pair of legs and went in to investigate, a surprising additional problem (on top of cold burns) is liquid oxygen condensing out on surfaces that have been cooled by other cryogenics, adds an exciting fire and explosion risk. Most incredible one I heard of recently was somebody at a US uni tried to push / carry a 250 Lt N2 dewar down some stairs. This would have weighed over 250 Kgs and ended up bouncing down the stairs and rupturing, tipping its 250 Lt contents down several flights. Then again thats academics for you.

Was it this article you read?

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle4794531.ece

Must be pretty irritating having to spend a month heating and re-cooling everything again every time you have to fix something. I wonder if they have to heat it all up again or if the cooling system is split into sections.

There's an interesting article on how the LHC is cooled here. Apparently they have 120 tonnes of helium there (and 10,000 tonnes of liquid nitrogen ), I wonder if it would it be difficult to extract that sort of amount from the tunnel if there is an even bigger quench.

I think he may well be working overtime trying to sort out some of the damage. I'd imagine this probably affects all departments there in one way or another. His profile shows he was last active over 2 days ago at any rate. Shame really, it would be interesting to hear his opinion on this as always.
