    Which OP Software

Im in the throes of getting some parts together for a top spec PC and was looking to utilise DDR2 PC2-8500 1066mhz ram,2 sticks eack 2GB.
I was told I would need a 64bit operating system so as it would run and be recognised. I have XP Pro but the 32bit version so thought I had better ask. I have a choice of dropping down to the PC2-6400 800 mhz ram, what do you recomend and was I told right about the OP software. Cheers....Alan

i,ve been running vista 64 on my main machine for about 6 months and it runs great. for a modern machine i would run that. not had a single crash since i started using it.

Hey, it's not the speed of the RAM that is teh problem with it needing a 64 bit operating system, it's teh size of the RAM. In Windows XP (32bit) you'll only be able to see just over 3gb of your RAM, where as in a 64 bit OS you'll be able to see all 4gb and much more if you add it at a later date.

I'd also recommend a version of Vista x64, since you're making a high spec PC it should have no issues running it, has been fine for me.

What is the most amount of RAM a 64 bit OS can see?

As for your case, Mblaster is right.

    128gb?

Well seeing as they are devving 16gb memory modules now on DDR3 then there is 64gb potential for a standard user

Obviously on a full workstation 128gb would be possible, however ECC is a lower yield afaik so would be a LOT more expensive for a workstation such as a Xeon rig

Limitations then come in on how much of your software is true 64bit as 32bit will have a lowery memory mapping boundary, so will not be able to use all the memory, whereas a 64bit coded properly could.

IMO 128gb will not be needed for at least 5-10 years depending on yield and cost seeing as over the past few years 1-2-4gb is 'good' to have for smoothness

Whats far more shocking is server 2008 standard + web editions been limited to 32GB..... Thats just stupid, yes right now the cost of that much ECC'd memory is hudge, but in 3 years time, it will be quite affordable.

Forgot to mention it's also chipset specific, P35/45 (not sure which) can only subbort up to 8gb

It will be affordable, needed for an individual server? I doubt it, we have 100 or so linked up for the project at work, each with 4gb RAM in each so more combined overall than on one individual server, probably near the same price currently too lol

    Re: Which OP Software

my calculation servers all have 16-24gb of ram.

our new database servers have 32gb (thou not the fastest it could of been, i swear it would of been faster to have faster memory, but less of it).

Anyway, whilst at this moment 32gb is enough for the standard, its going to be fairly standard to have more realtivly soon.

They will probably increase it with Sp1 if memory moves enough. It'll be pretty easy for them.

    indeed

the way xp home was switched from per-core to per-socket limiting (so you could use xp home on a dual core cpu)
