Bit speechless....
I'm really struggling to find the words to describe how unbelievable I think this is...
so there going to alienate what 99% of the university and make the 1% that are trans happy?
what is going on there!
Seems fair enough to me. I've never thought it was fair that I have to share toilets with a bunch of knuckledraggers who can't aim a stream of urine down a toilet without getting half of it on the seat and floor just because I'm male. Now everyone will have to suffer the same.
There should be three toilets: 'Mens', 'Womens' and 'Freaks'.
I saw this earlier today and just laughed. I've now resigned myself to the fact that PC/over sensitivity/grovelling hand-wringing anxious pleasing of everyone - is now sacrosanct in "modern Blairist Britian".
It just means that any stoodent can walk/wheel/hop/crawl/slither (in the case of the lawyeresque right-on mob that has proposed this) into any toilet and take a wizz without the notion of being aware of who is supposed to wizz where. Therefore, there are no rights and wrongs when it comes to needing a pee whether pissed up or not. Maybe it's not a bad thing ala "Starship Troopers" communal showers, but lets face it that's not going to happen. I'm sure the individuals that this was aimed at weren't contacted for their views.
I once worked with a trans-gendered/transvestite/transexual human being a decade ago and there is a cracking story I should pass on cos it makes me laugh everytime I think of it. I don't think the company had special loos or not and none of the women objected as far as I'm aware. We treated her as a she and that was that.
Anyway - I'm aware of 3 or 4 transexuals/transgenders (all men) in my current workplace (@4000 peeps) and it's quite sad to see one of them who is a bloke with a 5 o'clock shadow at ten in the morning queueing up at 12.30 in the canteen in the most shockingly bad blouse and skirt suit, stocking clad legs, false hair/wig, full lipstick looking like a Monty Python/Little Britain bloke in drag. God only knows how someone can have the courage to do that day in day out.
I think that the ones at work use the disabled toilets which are male and female anyway.
So if I put a dress on I can go in the Womans toilets? sweet :D
Taking my idea before a bit further though.
its a student union right? Well From my time at Uni I seem to remember the rugby Teams had a fetish for dressing in womans clothes on nights out. Thinking it through they are dressing as woman at the time albeit for a laugh(although ya do wonder with some of them) What toilets would they go into?
It's the Pygmies I feel sorry for. Not so much as a box to stand on at the urinals.
Manchester University are taking the piss.
I wonder where its written that every small special-interest group must always be pleased...usually at the expense of the majority.
Maybe the trans folks should have thought things liek this through before they opted for their optional operation. This isn't like having special handicapped stalls; those folks couldn't help their condition. The trans group *chose* to do what they did; why should they get special consideration? ^_^
What the heck is next? I don't know what to say either.
Ignoring the uninformed masses who seem to think that your gender is something you can choose (you can't, the vast majority of true transgendered individuals actually have male bodies with female shaped brains inside)
The main problem with the issue is that a small minority is dictating conditions to the majority, whilst ignoring a less inflamatory solution. When I was at university, the transgendered woman (pre-op), was simply asked to use the disabled toilets as they were designated unisex.
Personally though, I always wondered why you have male and female toilets? Why not just get rid of urinals completely and just have unisex toilets. Then it doesn't really matter who comes in, you're still inside your own cubicle where no one can see.
Because urinals are fun :D
urinal cakes make fun targets.
Just go into the disabled toilets. Hardly anyone uses them, they're always a lot cleaner, and, if you're pissed, you've got some snazzy rails you can hold onto if you feel yourself going horizontal.
Either that, or have another set of loo's: Male, Female, Tranny.
What a ridiculous statement. What shape is a female brain and how does it differ from a male brain?
You're right in part though. You can't change your gender. If you're born a man you are a man and no amount of hormone injections and surgery can change that.
How they feel inside is of no interest to me.
If they want to put on a dress and be called Loretta at weekends that's totally fine by me, but if they CHOOSE to have an operation to alter their appearance they should live with the consequences and the inconveniences that brings.
Why should the rest of us have to make allowances for the fact that poor sensitive Steve from Sheffield now has the outward appearance of a woman. If I was female I would be most unhappy about the idea of a man pretending to be a woman and sharing a toilet with me.
Oh, and while I'm having a rant, why is it called a "sex change" operation? All it is is cosmetic surgery. It's no more possible to change a man into a woman than it would be to change a dog into a cat. All you have at the end of a procedure is a man who looks like a woman or vice versa.
that's a man moran!Quote:

On a slightly different note, it reminds me of a (primarily student) club I went to in Amsterdam which had proper unisex loos with urinals along one wall and stalls along the other wall and everyone mucking along (pardon the phrase) as best they could. Once you got used to the idea it it really didn't feel all that strange.
its better than what they do in france.
urinals at the front, toilet cubicals at the back and make it unisex. plus dont forget the toliets are just holes in the ground.
To be honest, I'd rather use the fella's toilets.
I've been in a women's loo's a few times in nightclubs to use the bathroom as the queue for the gents was huge and I've never seen anything so disgusting in my life.
Women call the men's toliets for smelling a little bit which I can understand, but the sights I saw in the ladies was enough to scar me for life.

Come on, tell me about the ladyboys
Certain sections of the brain have been shown to differ in shape and density depending on the gender someone PERCIEVES themselves to be. Yes, in many cases people simply cross dress for kicks, but those people would never consider having the operations or hormone therapy.
Gender reassignment isn't something for mockery in the slightest, but well, this is Hexus General Discussion and this kind of irrational, uninformed reaction is to be expected...
Actually there are shape and size differences, but more importantly male and female brains differ in the way they work. From googling "difference between male and female brains" you get loads of info; eg

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/heshe.html
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Study_cl..._female_brains
And trans-sexuals have been shown to have all these differences in their brains? Literally a female brain in a male skull?
References for that please.
And what about chromosomes? Do trans-sexuals just have female chromosomes? If not how can an operation change someones sex?
The brain differences are in parts of the brain which are connected with identity(I think) but not the whole brain itself.
Gender re-assignment therapy just changes the outward appearance of the person but does not change them at the chromosomal level.Unless technology is developed to produce artificial gametes it is just cosmetic.

That's just from a quick Google search mind you.
And no, the differences *aren't* always present, but that's the difference between a transsexual and a transgendered invidvidual. Not to mention, as I previously acknowledged, some people simply crossdress for kicks.
At the chromosome level, some people will be "intersex", i.e. born with chromosomal defects that makes their gender undetermined, others will be genetically male but with the differences in the brain that cause them to percieve themselves as female, with attending female personality traits, yet others will just be suffering from a psychological condition.
All in all, it's *far* too complex to just go "they're all freaks" or "it's a man you moron"...
That said, I agree the university is just being silly and pandering too a minority needlessly. The compromise of ensuring enough unisex disabled toilets is more than adaquate.
Another crap-py toilet related image ;)

Haha. I'm sure a sign will stop people.
Its one of those bizzare differences between boys and girls, whilst men have the parts that make us good at Maths,Science,Sports etc, Woman have areas that appreciate ironing, and moaning whilst never doing any real work.
Figured we should have some good old fashioned sexism not silly tranny discrimination.
But what i'd love to know is how this is a problem?
If your a convincing tranny, you just go in the girls anyway? Where's the problem?
Now if you where a male, who'd become female, but was straight (ie, now gay) then i could understand some girls not liking the idea of sharing toliets with people who'd get off on the sharing of the toilets (if that makes sense, can't really understand it my self) But surely that could be the ONLY complaint with the original system?
Oh well, students unoins are always staffed by morons of the worst fecking kind. Many of whom want to go into politics!
why is it on Yahoo! paper?!
Political Correctness is the new Sliced Bread.
Occasionally useful, but over stated as something to have and use....
