    Exclamation Nehalem has landed!

Almost anyway, don't know where to put this topic but yeah...

"Nehalem" Core i7 Processors are now available for pre order frome overclockers - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produc...d=6&subid=1272. Also, the X58 motherboards are for pre order too - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produc...d=5&subid=1283, is this a good sign?

£490 for motherboard and processor, considering it's brand new tech I'm surprised how low the prices are

    Re: Nehalem has landed!

the intel SmackOver seems a little strange - 4x DDR3 Slots (Supporting Tri-Channel), why only 4 slots?

doesn't exist afaik... I guess there should be 3 slots for most mainstream boards as 3x2gb is more than enough for any sensible user... of course high end boards should have 6 slots

I guess the 4th slot is just there because they don't want to move backwards from 4 on C2D chipsets to 3 on i7

Odd, I'd have thought it would have 6 slots - two for each dual core..

I'm struggling to get your maths on this one stoo

It's a single socket board with a single on-die memory controller on the nehalem chip. The controller handles 3 channels, and motherboards have the option of pretty much any number they like greater than 3 - Intel have gone with a 3+1 arrangement, others two lots of 3.

I'll put money on a certain retailer 'boosting' prices before launch, or when they have low stock....

From what I remembered it was basically 3 dual cores on a single chip with a memory controller in the middle, it might be an odd setup, but dual 3 channel memory would work, effectively giving each core it's own memory slot..

    Obviously that's not the case

    Re: Nehalem has landed!

Heh you've described a sort of dunnington + memory controller, which is certainly a route they could have gone down.

But actually this generation of Nehalem is a native quad core.

    Re: Nehalem has landed!

But am I right in thinking that i7 will be good for more efficient power set up?

I was thinking of setting up i7 with with ATI's 4550 and a intel's SSD HDD.
So surley they'll be bringing out more Mobos for more media PC set up's.

I hate to ask, I know that i7 will be a propper Quad Core CPU.
But, wht is this you speak of memory slots? What difference does it make if you have 4 or 6 slots?

Nope. At least, not yet. More likely a different core i series will come out for power efficiency.

Again not yet - current nehalem is enthusiast only. Next year they'll release mainstream chips.

The enthusiast nehalem (bloomfield/i7) has a memory controller than can operate up to three channels to the memory simultaneously. To take advantage of that you need to have a number of memory sticks that is some multiple of three - either three sticks, or three pairs. If you have four slots then you can only take advantage of triple channels by using just three slots. As soon as you use four you will drop down to dual channel.

The motheboards and processors have gone from OCUK! The bundles remain...

Are they still under NDA I wonder?

They've always been under NDA, and OcUK have always put them up for pre-order before the NDA is lifted. Haven't you noticed they're always like that with the latest products?
Although this is the first time it's dissappeared off though.
