A word of advice - only use the default templates if absolutely necessary. Employers hate having to rifle through 25 utterly generic CVs. It's difficult given the required content & space constraints, but really try to be original, even if the changes are subtle...

    Re: cv software help???

^ I agree with that point.

Defo try and change it in places if you use a template. Or better still make your own layout, and just use some ideas from other layouts and templates

On a side note, does anyone know what kind of paper is decent for printing CV's on? what should the weight be...

    No.

I always bin them on principle, ******s, the other 25 people adhered to the design guidelines, they didn't.

Enless its a graphics design role, you want them to impress you with the content, not the layout, keeping the layouts the same is very important.

The agency we use at my current place re-formats them all to the same standard for us, it makes comparing people a hell of a lot easyer!

If you've specified your required format this is blindingly obvious. However, I don't see it as relevant since the OP wants general advice on formatting a CV.

Personally, I prefer the candidate who has made some effort. Cookie cutter CVs (whatever shape they may be - Word ships with some wildly differing examples) do nothing for me.

    Re: cv software help???

Just make it is to the point, not so much as its too short but not so over the top that they have about 20 pages and know your underpants size.

If you see a job make sure you read what they want and address each requirement... you will get an interview at least. Also know your CV like the back of your hand as it will be used to question you later. I have interviewed for my own positions when moving on so I have been on both sides of the table. I always like to have a bit of "small talk” before an interview to get the feel of a person when they are not being formal... that is the real person. Any small talk needs to be friendly, light and if you can make them laugh (not in a crude or nasty way) then you are already off to a good start. I can say that every job I have ever had an interview for I have always managed to get the job. Relax, be yourself and you can't fail.

Also always remember that being nervous is not a bad thing, everyone is nervous, even the interviewers. Oh and telephone interviews are not nice!

So to sum up, keep the layout but don't and make sure it's neither long nor short.

if the only way to make your CV stand out is by tarting it up, then maybe but otherwise it REALLY should speak by content, not presentation.
