    Dissertation ideas...

I know some people have posted before about helpful ideas so i was hoping I could get some of the same.

Im studying Real Estate Management, commercial and resi.

I wanted to learn abit more about property auctions but currently cant think of a hypothesis so im struggling with that

Other ideas or areas im thinking of looking into are:

    - British second home purchases (where & why) again, no hypothesis
    - Hotdesking (impact of the credit crunch) not sure if i can write 12k words on this
    - Olympics games and the effects on surrounding areas?(broad subject, could get quite boring though?)

Any ideas at all guys and gals would be great

    Thanks

    Re: Dissertation ideas...

Give us an idea of some of the subjects/modules you've studied in the past year, and which, you found most interesting.

I presume you're talking about a Batchelor's Degree and not a Masters or PhD ?

The best advice anyone gave me when I was doing my Batchelors Dissertation was that you're not trying to PROVE anything, you're just proving that you know how to research something and draw conclusions based on the research. On a Masters course you do more research for bigger conclusions, and it's only on the PhD that you actually prove something.

    Re: Dissertation ideas...

ive studied/studying investment, property valuations, financial rsource management, contract law.

    yeh its a batchelors degree

I find commercial and residential property interesting, property abroad. Im not very goodat economics so thats out the equation. The ideas that i have mentioned are mainly what im interestedin atm.

Just not sure whathow to turn them into titles

    Re: Dissertation ideas...

I'm afraid that i have no significant professional knowledge at all, but maybe my personal situation might stimulate something...?
My wife and I bought a house in Nottingham 5 yrs ago, and when the time came to move down London way we wanted to sell it in order to buy another (same-ish size, but more expensive. Bloody southern living!).
We found that (1 yr ago) the market was already diving, and we couldnt sell. So we're renting it out, covering our mortgage, and have moved into rented property to use as a base to become familiar with the good and bad geographical areas here. We have since found somewhere, and have borrowed from my mum a deposit for a new place that's going through right now.
So we will shortly own 2 places, which is quite a nice feeling, as i never thought of myself as a property person, and don't have the highest paid job.

    Re: Dissertation ideas...

hey thanks for the ideas. I like the one about the olympics, just gotta phrase that into a title.

I was thinking of this also

"Is it a myth that property auctions are the place to go for cheap property?"

Someone has done something with a very similar title, but im not sure if thaat would mean i cant?

    Re: Dissertation ideas...

A prospective title for Olympics based dissertation?

An investigation into the social/economic/redevelopment/whatever effect in developed cities preparing for/during/post large scale international [sports] events.

Not sure exactly what about the games it was you were looking for, or which period. You would have to hone it down, but the "large scale international [sports] events" allow you to investigate/research a wider field than the Olympics (e.g. Commonwealth), or if you don't use sports, then you could use International Festivals as part of the study.

Are auctions the 'best' indicator and way to evaluate the current state of the property market compared to say land reg, rightmove, property bee etc.
