    Question Another Dissertation Idea Thread.

Hi Hexus, I am back at uni - and I have the one outstanding module remaining, 8000 word dissertation. I did take this last semester, but because of issues with another module, I didn't submit to save my self from getting a poor grade overall. hence I want to get it right this time.

I need to get some inspiration on a topic, I'm doing Media Technology - So it should be focused on that. What could be some good areas I would be able to question, debate/argue and hypothesis? So far I was thinking about digital cinema, something to do with data storage - solid state video cameras? Holographic display/projection...what's beyond LCD and plasma display technology? Storage after dvd and bluray?

I need something great some of the modules i've done, which i could draw on were:-

Level 5: video production technologies, design for digital publishing, 3D modelling and animation for simulation, streaming media, sound design for the moving image, media management in industry and DVD production.

level 6: media business practice, exhibition and performance or digital broadcast media, or option modules; video post production, audio post production, design for integrated media or laser display technology and performance.

Any suggestions or ideas are much appreciated.

Sounds like you and I are in the same fix - I've done/am doing very much similar modules to you, and I'm struggling to write a suitable proposal.

Do you need to produce anything (in addition to the dissertation)? Although an investigative paper will do well, given the modules you have done it'll be a shame not to produce something for prospective employers - and if you do want to show something off, what do you want to show? Then think of an underlying area which you can incorporate. E.g. my mate's doing a new media showcase (artifacts) in the domain of viral marketing (investigative part).

It's all very well repeating what others have said, and how to generate a title, but I'm finding it hard to do something that's gonna be "great" - it's all been done before . . .

    Re: Another Dissertation Idea Thread.

Hi Acid, thanks for replying - Well, there isn't a requirement to produce anything in addition, I'm not sure if it would merit extra marks. but if it is of some use, possibility I could. I'd have to find out though. I've got 2 weeks to do the proposal, and then get started on the paper. (because im doing both things in one semester as a part time student, unlike the other year 3's).

I agree with you, im the same...finding it hard to come up with something innovative. plus i'm not up to date on tech and tech advancements!

Do you mind if I ask what course you're doing?

    Re: Another Dissertation Idea Thread.

Digital Media at the moment, but it's probably not what I'm going to graduate in (not that it makes much difference, there's about a million and one similar type, but different named, courses out there).

I am basically going to do something on music videos - even though it's more tuneable to the sound of an 80s/90s dissertation when it was somewhat newish. I still don't have a title, though I'm leaning towards animation and compositing techniques. Again, nothing new - but when other people are looking at stop frames and such like, then I don't see why not.

Actually, if you wanted to do something relatively new, why not look into the area of Interaction Design? It's not really HCI, but convergence of technology, arts and everyday life - it's constantly evolving and is somewhat an up and coming field. I found it a pretty interesting subject, and had I not secured a well-sought supervisor for a visual media project it's probably what I would be doing. Though not having done it as a subject may not interest you, or could even disadvantage you.

Did your uni release a primer for possible dissertation titles? They're usually ones made up by the lecturers/professors and are quite boring, but you can get some inspiration from them...

    Re: Another Dissertation Idea Thread.

Yea! the convergence of technology and arts was something I thoughts about, mainly as well because the supervisor for that subject was very good (which always helps), but he's not on the course this year...so I don't know.

hmm music videos...it's not such a bad thing if the topics chosen ain't so new, at least they'll be alot of literature to research. they bad thing is with upcoming or emerging technology there isn't always books on them, and even if there are - technology moves so fast they aren't of great use!
