If we vote the Lib Dems, we'd have a load of criminals running around free...oh wait, that already happens

Guys if you don't like this then VOTE! Make some noise. These MPs serve US the people who voted for them into parliament. Once they realise that 70m (rough guess) of mobile phone users wont stand for this it'll be scrapped very quickly. 70m people can end a government if you express your feelings in the right way.
Libertarian Party FTW - they appear to be the only party that give a crap about personal freedom, sure they won't get in but it'll make the powers that be stand up and take note.
Me too. I hope noone ever thinks up the idea of intercepting our browsing habits and installing spyware at the unavoidable ISP level.
Has the penny dropped yet?
If only it was a case of easily avoidable ISPs doing it for commercial gains, rather than a government doing it to EVERYONE, and inprisoning them for weeks without trail!
I Really really hope that you will get the distinction. One is of major concern because we don't live in china despite what the government might think, one is a case of some companies doing something because they have the freedom to do so, just in the same way plenty of other companies have the freedom not to, and charge more.
Honestly, don't even begin to confuse the two in levels of seriousness.

For whom? The "No mobile phone database party?"
The problem with saying that we should all vote because of issues like this is that people vote for all sorts of issues, but it won't be over this. When you get one chance, every five years or so, to vote, most people will choose their vote either because they always vote <insert party here>, or because their parents did, or because they're worried about their jobs, the economy, or major issues like that.
The only way you'll actually get real change on party political opinion is if politicians think they'll lose serious numbers of votes. So rather than voting, you MIGHT get a better effect if you write to your prospective MP and indicate that your vote depends on his views on this. Or you might get the result G4Z did when he wrote to his MP.
Or, of course, we could call for a referendum. But if we can't get one on the European constitution (by whatever name) despite all three parties promising one in their manifesto, I wouldn't hold your breath expecting politicians to listen to us over this.
The idea that we have any real democracy in this country is farcical. What we have, at best, is a chance every five years, to change the bunch of patronising, self-interested muppets that make all the decisions for us. And even that is barely more than a magic roundabout. It's the same bunch of muppets gathered round it, and we just change who's sitting on which seat periodically.
A cynic? Me? <shrug>

One is applicable to every citizen, they can't avoid it.
One people can INCREDIBLY easily not use the services of a SPECIFIC company.
Lets try this ONE MORE TIME BECUASE YOU REALLY DONT GET THE BASIC OF THE FREE MARKET AND IT DRIVES ME F**KING NUTS.
Company makes money from Phorm, Someone might not want to have their traffic go through their systems, they goto an Alternative that WILL COST MORE because its not been subsidised by phorm.
This means consumers get to benefit by the powers of competition forcing the company to pass on the profit made by phorm. Those who don't want to be inspected have a choice, and pay more for it.
This GOVERNMENTAL scheme would build a profile that is on step closer to 1982, but with NO legal way of opting out.
Now, as i've said before if every UK ISP started using Phorm, I'd start my own, i would have very little difficulty getting the capital to do so if every other ISP where moronic enough to use phorm. I would probably be able to get it as soon as i could step into the company directors office. If the situation you invisign happening with such religous zeal did happen, i would obviously do this, it would make me a fortune, and i'd retire < 25.
