    Name changing

And I mean your actual real life name.

Were you to just spontaneously change your name, the kaboodle on deed poll too, do you think you would you adjust well? Or even at all?

I've been giving a little consideration to it, never really liked my name (first name or surname) but I reckon it'd be rather weird having to get everyone to call you something completely different.

Like me, people have been calling me Kyle all my life, how odd must it be to just change into somebody else? Say I legally said 'That's it, from now on I'll be called JK in real life too'.

Also, what of the hassle of telling all the various companies that you deal with (banks, employer, also passport and driving license).

I guess that when women get married, they have to go through a form of this, just for surname.

Has anyone here changed their name? If so, it'd be interesting to hear about it.

Apologies if it all makes little to no sense, I'm a little tired, I'l try and reorganise the words tomorrow

    Re: Name changing

I changed my surname last year. Informing all of the companys etc was a hassle, but it's the same when you move house really. All you need to do is give proof (i.e. a legal copy of the deed poll).

The only change that I've had to adapt to myself is having to spell out a different surname to people that don't understand phonetics. I had the same issue with my old surname, so I'm not that bothered about it.

    Re: Name changing

I just voted "No, I don't think I could", but then thought, "well, if I eventually get maried, she would change her name" so really, why couldn't I change my to hers instead?

It isn't commen, but poeple do sometimes do it. If I had a particularly unusual (read: crap) surname, then I would be happy to change mine to my spouses rather thant eh other way about. My surname isn't exactly unusual at the moment, in fact it's a bit bland really.

I very nearly changed my surname to 'Swipe' after my first mariage ended, then I'd have been I.R.Swipe

    Strangely glad I didn't

    Re: Name changing

I changed my surname a couple of years ago. My original surname was double-barrelled (which is annoying for the amount of stuff I have to sign for on a daily basis) and was made up by my Dad when he got married anyway. I decided to use the original family name, which seemed appropriate and a bit shorter for when I sign for things! Think it cost me £100 in all, including the deed, passport and other admin fees.

    Re: Name changing

It's probably going to be more weird for the people who have known you under your old name for a while than for you, especially if you pick a name you are happy with. Some may even ask you 'why' in the first instance. You could always 'unofficially' adopt a name, see if you can get used to it before making the change. That would save the hassle of having to contact all the various companies only to find that you can't get used to it.

    Re: Name changing

A while back I had my surname double barrelled. That was quite straightforward. Although if you change your christian name, I can guess it would be a little difficult, but then, most people have 'nicknames' so ... I don't see it would be that hard ...

I'll stop my mindless waffle now.

Can I live in your brain plz? (And did you get Mass Effect this morning?)

Name changing is pointless - what are you going to do, go around to everyone you know, and say 'Right, I've got this bit of paper with a name change on it, so don't call me Steve, call me John, starting... *now*'

And the point is? Unless your name is causing you genuine embarassment...

Theo - how come you changed your surname anyway?

Does anyone ever get called by their last name, constantly?

There are about 3 people which use my first name, everyone else refers to me by my last one.

    Re: Name changing

Ade, I do... I was EASTAM all the way through school.

I have considered changing my first name officially to Rai as it takes a while for those who know me by my official name to pick it up without asking questions (usually @ work)

I would love to change my second name as i hate it...

    £34 from here.

However, the big cost (and I don't remember it being this expensive when I did it a couple of years ago) is the £74 to get your passport ammended.
    http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/fees.asp

I believe the DVLA will change your name for free, although I would pay for recorded delivery as they have the habit of losing your license sometimes.
