    Exclamation Piracy in Somalia!

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7735507.stm

Prince Saud Al-Faisal said the international community needed to fight piracy.

Speaking during a visit to Athens, he compared piracy to terrorism describing it is "a disease which is against everybody, and everybody must address it together".
    LOL

Mmmkay, so a bit of a misquote but still.....

One a more serious note, one would think that given the value of the contents of that super tanker, and the fact there have been many other cases of piracy in this region, the ship's operators would prepare for such a situation and at least have some form of security on the ship (as far as I am aware, there was no security force on the ship, but I am willing to stand corrected if anyone is able to prove otherwise).

They are advised to carry security and run a faster speed in at risk areas. This ship chose to ignore that, captains are pressured by the ship owners to get the best performance for price out of the ships so they always run at the most economical speed.

There are somthing like 20 nations with warships in the area but they can't be everywhere at once, it's always happened just the nature and size of the cargo means it's making the news now.

Hardly any. None of which will be trained in close-combat or care enough about the cargo to risk their lives.

    Re: Piracy in Somalia!

Crew of 25 on board that vessel. You'll have a Captain, a Mate quite possibly a second Mate, a cook a couple of engineers or possibly more, some general labour for maintenance duties, docking and the like.

And if someone walked up to your car with an AK, would you argue with them or just hand it over?

They're recommended to have certain types of security which include certain audio devices to emit very loud noise to cause nausea/sickness and be debilitating but other than that the vessels are recommended to be unarmed.

Personally I think we should give them 24 hours warning, send in the special forces or whatever the hell they want to rescue the men, if they can rescue the ship then do as such otherwise sink the tanker where it lies, firebomb it and combust the oil. Issue a general threat that any future vessel taken by force and we'll flaten the town that this ship is anchored near, being Eyl, Somalia.

General recommendation to arm all vessels travelling in the vacinity and sink all vessels in international waters that are detected (they're using mobile phones which are relatively easy to detect) as not having a very valid reason for being there. An act of piracy is an act of terrorism, it's far more prevalent that you would believe, with conservative estimates putting the value of piracy at approximately $15billion US and rising, with only a potential 15-20% of piracy reported.

Many of the ships just disapear and are never seen again as they will modify, disguise and re-sell them either as working ships or as scap which has commanded good value over the past few years, some are taken into secluded places and cargo's emtied before being sunk, set adrift or ransomed back to their owners and others are raided for their stores of things such as food, water, money (the crews payroll is often stored in the on board safe) and medical stores and left steaming on their original courses with no crew often in some of the busiest seaways on the planet.

My personal oppinion of crime with armed force on the high sea is that if you were prepared to take others lives by carrying weapons then rather than mess about and bring people back or arresting them, they should be terminated at location. Save us tax payers a fortune and stop all the asylum nonsense.

    Re: Piracy in Somalia!

What they need is Steven Segal to work on their boats as a cook.

He'll sort out all the pirate's that try to take over the ship, and also rack up some nice cooking to boot
