    Register of Electors 2008/09

    I've received a letter to my new flat, requesting Registration to the Electoral Roll. As this isn't a permanent address (renting) I'd prefer to have left all my registered addresses as my parents. As such, I ignored the previous letter(s), but it keeps coming back to me.

    Do I have to fill it in, I'm guessing so... but why, surely it's only giving me the right to vote, which I don't particularly want to do.

    Do you have any bank accounts registered at that address? If you do, being on the electoral register there will help your credit rating.

    I also believe it's a legal requirement to state who is eligible in a household, but I'm sure Saracen will know for sure.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Everything I have is registered at my parents, banks, mobile phone, car, the lot...... I don't want to have to change all these over, for what might be 3 months.

    You have to register at your permanent address.
    As you are renting a flat, this will be the place (i assume) where you reside most of the year.

    If you dont register you will be taken to court and fined.

    Re: Register of Electors 2008/09

    Blitzen is right .... almost. "Almost" as in right, but not quite complete.

    The default position is that you register, and vote, where you live ... i.e. at your main address, where you are defined as "residing", which isn't quite the same as where you currently live. For instance, you might have a main address in Oxford, but a flat in Southampton, because you spend a fair few nights kipping down there for work. Do you register in Southampton? I'd say not.

    But there are special cases. One is students.

    For instance, students will probably have their parent's address as their base address, but be renting if studying away from home. The rented address isn't really where you reside, in that situation, even if you spend more of you time there than at "home". If that's the case, you can register at both, but MUST be registered at one or the other. And, as Blitzen said, being registered is mandatory, and an offence if you don't.

    But students can register at BOTH addresses. The reason is that an election can be called at any time, and can vote at EITHER location. But NOT both - that again, will get you prosecuted if they catch you.

    But if your actual home is your rented flat, then regardless of the fact that it's rented, it's where you ought to be registered, as far as I know.

    If in doubt, call the local council and ask them. There's probably a number on the form, or if not, on the web. Explain your exact circumstances, and what you want to do and why, and I'm sure they'll confirm whether you must register at your rented address or whether it's optional.

    I've never had any luck with online registration. If you have never registered at the property address they want a signed signature off you on the paper form.

    I had the same issue recently with my move to Aylesbury.

    Not always.
    We registered in Cardiff online for the first tme no problems.

    We are now near Cambridge (Huntingdon), and they do not support online registration.
    Its all down to the local authority in question.
