I am a fan of accurist but only because I've had the same watch for 16 years and apart from batteries, 2 strap links and a replaced button and glass (due to a very messy night 10 years ago ), it's still as good as the day I got it.

G-shock watches look terrible IMHO.. and I'm a bit put off Casio for some reason..
I'm not sure I want to know about that messy night!
Cheers for the suggestions so far.. tempted by something like this at the moment:
Noddy instructions on the front aside, looks okay to me.
It's rather ironic that some of us end up servicing our mechanical oysters for a tidy sum of £255 (as of May 2008) to about 700quid+ (Plat. DDs) ~ Patek, you're looking at circa £1000 upwards, easily, for a service.
These services are recommended every five years, with at least a water-resistance test each year.
The throw away/buy new approach makes more sense if you ask me, but who said "sense" had anything to do with it, right
Hehe true. As a concession to you mike, I am also briefly considering this one:
It's the only mechanical movement watch I could afford really at £58 or so. Still rather ugly though.
Quite; it seems to be a poor attempt at copying the look of a Breguet or to be more precise, seems to draw from a few concepts. Ideally it should look like this:
...and that would a tourbillon in the centre, not your run-of-the mill spring balance Tourbillons are quite stunning; I believe the balance itself undergoes a rotation of 2π per minute, to help ward off the effects of gravity.

Well next time you accidentally buy two of the same you can send one my way Mike
Went for the Timex pictured - looks and feels fine. Annoyance is that the alarm is 12 hour rather than 24 hour, so you either activate/deactivate each day (simple), or listen to it going off in the evening as well. I've never seen such a crude alarm timing before either - you set it by moving triangles on the face for the hour/minute, but you can see little metal filaments coming off the triangles and the hour/minute hands have metal tips - when it gets to the right time it brushes against the filaments, completes the circuit and the alarm goes off!
Hopefully something so simple won't go pop quite as quickly!
