    Question Induction hobs

has anyone had any experience cooking on one of these?

im interested in peoples experiences and if induction cooking is better than a standard electric/ceramic hob?

is it easier? energy efficient? safer? or is it just a gimic?

    any advice would be appricated

    thanks in advance

    Re: Induction hobs

I used a friends early style stand alone one.

Thought they where a heap of sh!t and there was no way i'd give up my gas hob.

Then i used one of the modern sort. Now i'm a beliver. Not a trace, of doubt in my mind.

You do have to have ferrous pans, but you should have good pans anyway I've found infinate circulon are nice and cheap, yet good quality.

You get amazing granularity on the control more so than on a gas hob. They are easyer to clean, can boil water faster than my old gas hob could......

But they do cost a lot!

    Re: Induction hobs

My parents have one (did know the make but it escapes me at the moment) and it is fantastic. They have had it about 8 years now and my mum would never go back to anything else.

Easy to clean, almost instant reaction time for cooking on, plus if you leave it on randomly or forget to turn it off you can't burn yourself on it!

As for special pans, they just have to be ferrous as Animus says. My mum used her old pans as they worked fine.

I want one but they are far too expensive!

im not sure on this one, as the set of pans i have are stainless steel but with a copper base!? so there is about 15mm of copper before you get to the steel.. would they work in your opinion?

also does anyone know if the running cost is higher than standard electric?

    Re: Induction hobs

much lower than standard electric apparently.

They are a lot more effecient, only the pan heats up, the glass gets warmed only as a result of conduction from the pan itself.

Stick a magnet next to the pan base, if it sticks, induction cooking ready, if it falls its not.

    Re: Induction hobs

I've considered these (got ceramic hobs atm), but the high cost of the hobs puts me off a bit. I miss cooking on gas.
