    Abandonware thread

Sorry guys, but for now at least, it's been removed.

As far as we can tell, something being no longer supported or sold doesn't mean it's out of copyright, and while copyright enforcement may be unlikely, it's still at the vest a very grey area.

If someone can come up with a convincing reason why this is legally acceptable, then the thread can be brought back. But I've got my doubts if you can.

    Re: Abandonware thread

There are a few old games where the original copyright holders have allowed open copying but they are individual cases.
One that springs to mind is the original GTA

However Scaraen is correct and most of these old games are still under copyright and held on someones books as assists.
The copyright will generally cover not just the original game but all material relateing to said game, includes thing like possible new titals using the original storyline/setting, art work, novels or other media relateing to the original game.
Even if they are never used there is still the possibility of use so it's still actually worth money and becomes listed as an assist.

There is no convincing reason - it's still illegal distribution.

Abandonware is a convenient, but completely made up label applied to old pirate software.

If it has been officially released into the public domain *like any in this list * then it's fair game, but 99.9% of 'abandonware' hasn't been officially released.

    We had an abandonware thread?

Or was it something new and removed so swiftly between my clicks of new posts?

yes i started a theard with i link to a site that claims to be "the biggest free abandonware" site. i started the thread without thinking, it might be breaching some old copyrights.

as i know little about copyright, im not sure i can put together a case for getting the thread reinstated. anyone got perry mason's number??

Ah, well we all make mistakes. Only way you'd get the thread reinstated is if the abandonware has been released freely by the copyright holders. Then it wouldn't be abandonware but freeware

You could always contribute to the current freeware thread
