Unhappy Sudden Decline in Typing Speed and Accuracy

I have always thought that my typing speed and accuracy were pretty high. However, a couple of weeks ago I came into work one day, as normal, feeling OK and noticed that not only had my typing speed declined but my accuracy dropped terribly. It was a sudden decline, not something that took place over a long period, hence it was very noticeable.

I thought it was maybe because I was tired, or hadn't eaten properly or something, so I left it. A couple of days later I notice I am still having big problems. I normally touch type, I can't do this very well anymore as I make too many mistakes, but the bizarre thing is, they aren't normally spelling mistakes, I will type the wrong word but spell it correctly. Obviously I'm not perfect and do sometimes make spelling mistakes, but normally am quick enough to know I make a mistake as I hit the keys, so immediately delete the offending character and carry on. Now I don't notice these mistakes until I read back what I've written.

As I work on an IT helpdesk, typing is paramount to my occupation, I have to be fast and accurate whilst on the phone so this is really starting to affect me. I'm actually starting to get a bit worried that something could be wrong (either my sight, hand-eye coordination or my brain) which is causing this to happen.

Should I be worried? Can anyone think of any logical reasons for this? Am I getting old (I'm only 29 dammit!)? I don't exactly know how to approach this medically, I think my doctor would look at me strangely if I went to see her and said "my typing skills are going downhill".

TLDR Version: i cnat tipe probably, is me brain fudged up?!?!

P.S. Please try not to derail this thread, I welcome all serious input.

Re: Sudden Decline in Typing Speed and Accuracy

My spelling is fine, the problem is that I'm not typing the correct words and unable to notice when I make a typing error, whereas before the accuracy was much better.

Re: Sudden Decline in Typing Speed and Accuracy

Besides the degradation of your typing skills, are you suffering from any other symptoms?

You might as well go see a doctor, no harm in doing so.

EDIT: Have you changed your keyboard?

The same thing happens to me if I move my keyboard slightly, I miss keys for days until I adjust. I went to the doctor about it and he said to move it back.

I don't think so. Apart from a god awful toothache which is causing me massive headaches (going to dentists tomorrow) everything else seems fine. And no, I haven't changed or moved my keyboard, or changed the posture in which I sit at my desk, at home or at work.

Re: Sudden Decline in Typing Speed and Accuracy

How's your home life? Finances? Love life? Family all ok?

I think you should consider that you're not 100% focused, and you might not even know that you're subconsciously thinking of something else.

Re: Sudden Decline in Typing Speed and Accuracy

I find that when I think about typing, I get worse, so maybe you're just getting the fact that you can't type into your head, so you try more, and get into more of a tangle.

Re: Sudden Decline in Typing Speed and Accuracy

I went through a rough spell a few months ago (relationship issues etc), and after a few weeks when i started to get back ontop of things i noticed that my typing was still a bit funny. id be typing a sentance and the odd word or two i used to get wrong. Id get the first letter right, and the number of letters right but id put a totally random/wrong word in, so instead of typing ''the'' id put in ''tea'' and general stuff like that!

i just put it down to my subconscious not focusing, and had to take a bit more extra care. After a few weeks, and once everything had fully settled down it gradually improved.

    Spooky thing, the mind!

Go see a doctor. No need to worry about it, but I'd leave it to the experts rather than relying upon the less than helpful advice of Clunk et al.

Home life? Poor. Finances? Poor. Love life? DOA. Family? All fine and dandy AFAIK.

It is possible that I'm not focused, I have a lot going on at the moment. I guess it could be linked back to when I started dieting about 2-3 weeks ago, so maybe my body isn't getting the usual junk and extra energy it was back then and this is it's way of showing that. I'll see how it goes I guess, if it gets worse I'll get my eyes tested and go see the doc.
