I was wanting to thank Elmo for their gorgeous Lentil soup recipe but the thanks option is not available. Looking through a few hotpot threads most have it but a few don't.
Is there a reason for this? I can't see anything in a FAQs or searching.

It's a policy. Only relatively recent posts can be thanked. I wasn't involved in that decision, so can only guess, but I'd say it's because the thanks system is supposed to be about recent activity, not very old threads.
just because a post is old, doesnt stop it being useful to someone though
