Cheap Desks?

Right,

I've just finished my pc off, watercooling in a full tower case, so sitting it on my glass desk is a no, it's already curving with my old pc on it so....

I am looking for a new desk, got to be wooden/metal, preferably available in pine to match my tesco direct wardrobe and drawers

I've seen this at argos, nice size, looks ok, no shelf for my printer/modem/router though - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...ext%3EDESK.htm

It is shorter than what I have at the moment by 30cm, so i'm not sure. I'm now leaning towards a corner desk but cant find a good one...

Basically, i'm looking for places that sell desks, I've tried the usual, argos, ikea, staples, tesco and I can't find something I want

Thanks,

Peter.

Re: Cheap Desks?

I'd avoid desks with sides... get one with just legs, cos air flow is better, cabling easier etc.

Ikea. But a desk top surface and then choose 4 legs. Non height adjustable legs are really cheap and the dsk tops surfaces have the holes ready drilled. Height adjustable legs more expensive but worthy.

Bet you dont spend for than £53 either.

Re: Cheap Desks?

Ikea website is complex... until you get used to it...

£12.71 for desk top
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60117016

4 legs at £1.71 each
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10105290

or £6.85 per adjustable leg
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60105301

Done.

edit: I've got one of these £24.47
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60104325
for a storage box and Sair's SFF gaming rig to go in, in place of two of the legs. It's same height as the standard legs, so fits perfectly.

Re: Cheap Desks?

I have that morgan desk, pretty good and sturdy. I dont remember having the back bit(top part) but maybe its optional, there is another piece of wood that goes at thew back near the top of the legs to support it(same as the board going across) but its a nice desk for me .

Re: Cheap Desks?

Nice idea Zak, it's cheap even with the £35 delivery, I'm sure I could get it collected though. I'm tempted by the 1.5m desk rather than the 1.2, although the 2m if even more tempting!

I'm still wanting a corner desk though, but the table top and legs idea is a winner!

Re: Cheap Desks?

Wish i knew about ikea selling online , i was looking everywhere for parts to build one. TotemTimber were charging very high for legs(£30 each i think) and the top would cost me £25~ along with it being weaker than that argos one .

Long kitchen surface (saw to size) + your preferred heavy-duty legs + drill + big screws
= awesome desk.

Where can I buy the worktop and legs? That could be an idea too for a cheap corner desk, perfect sized

Re: Cheap Desks?

Freecycle first (people are always redoing kitchens), then try any company which supplies kitchen stuff, but they will probably mark it up a lot. My kitchen desk underneath is branded "AXIOM Worksurface Solutions."

Edit: for legs I just use very thick square legs from a local wood supplier, sanded and varnished. You could do with access to a circular saw to cut the desk & legs though, and the corners can look a little rough as the venire doesn't take kindly to DIY cutting.

There is also Gumtree, which is a lot like Freecycle but with prices attached. Most people seem to ask silly prices, but every now and then it seems there is a good deal. I was having a browse recently and found a decent sized corner desk with lots of shelves on top for £20. I'd have had it but it's not really what I want.

Re: Cheap Desks?

B&Q ftw, I built a solid pine desk a few years ago for under £40
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?

Ikea do some good computer desks, IVe got a (sadly discontinued) jerker, but the fredrik is very similar and theyre £53..
Nice strong desks with a metal frame.
Getting it in a cars intresting, wouldnt fit in my old 205, so had to send my dad in his civic, and it just fitted.
