My MP3 Player is Deaded :(

So, time to get out my bank card and get a new one

Trouble is, i'm not to sure what would be best to go for. The three main brands i'm considering are Creative, Sony and Apple. I had a Sony before - great player besides the godawful interface (sound was very good) - so i'm happy to go with them again. The best offering i could find from them was their 16GB flash one for around £100. I'm thinking about waiting for the NWX-1000 http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/06/s...led-in-french/ which is supposed to be being released at some point this year - and looks amazing quite frankly.

Then we go to creative, who've got the 32GB flash Zen (not the X-Fi) for £150 or the X-Fi for around £180. Creative, i'm told, have good sound quality too (and so they should), but reviews are mixed and people complain about the build quality - as well as the X-Fi being ugly and the buttons look weird.

Finally we come to Apple, i was tempted a while back by the 160GB classic which they've since taken off the market - but then i thought, meh, unless i'm going to be uploading all my music in FLAC there's not much point. So, the iPod touch is probably what i'd get if going the apple route. It's expensive, but then it looks sexy as hell, has the whole touchscreen stuff and doubles as a smartphone without the phone-ness. Apple audio quality, is, apparently not good though. I was thinking maybe get a classic though.. Yes the 32GB touch is tempting, but it's just way too overpriced (and this is coming from the guy who just bought a macbook ).

So, budget not too important - lets say keep it under £200. Needs to have a fair amount of space (i have a lot of music and i don't like just putting up one song - it needs to be the whole album!) i try to upload albums at 320kbs too - 16GB minimum, more is preferrable. Size is fairly important, i mean it needs to be pretty slick (but most of them are these days). Screen isn't too important, as i'm not too fussed about watching videos (they take up too much space if i was going for a 16GB).

Ideas - i'm thinking wait for the sony to be announced/released?

Cowon are generally considered one of (if not )the best in terms of sound quality so something of theirs might be worth a look:

Iriver are very good aswell, archos arent bad. Sandisk make one of the best and they are onpar with cowon on most of their players now, have a look at their range and they will provide better value for money(12gb sansa view for £60 i think).

Re: My MP3 Player is Deaded :(

Cheers guys, i'll have a look.

I did think about Cowon, but people seem to say that whilst the audio is top notch, build quality suffers and the GUI is a bit stiff.

Oh and drag and drop is a must (i think Sony support it now which is why i'm especially looking at them) - as well as decent battery life!

TrekStor look like an interesting option, never heard of them before, but they look quite slick - and have very decent specs (they bundle with sennheiser headphones for a start!).

Sandisk are tempting, i'll be interested to see how their "slotmusic" system is working. It seems like a great idea for the future - buy your media DRM free on flash cards, although in hindsight it seems slighlty pointless!

sony indeed do drag and drop, have a NW-A816 4gb and a NWS-828 i think its called (16gb) both top notch! good gui, good features, i player support for example, fm radio and some other non using niftyfeatures!

for 16gb the price i think is MUCH better than say apples offerings, far too expensive..

A friend of mine just spent over £100 on bud earphones and will be buying an ipod. He seemed to think that it has very good sound quality but I've always been under the impression that its sound quality is average (not that I've read up on them recently). Is your opinion based on recent research? Not that I'm saying you should get an ipod

No complaints from me. I'm on my 3rd and each has been an absolute joy. I'm not sure where the build quality complaints come from, but I guess the GUI isn't that swish - but that's pretty much subjective. To be honest, make the screen black and white and the menu navigation is the same as an iPods.

The only thing I don't like about mine, and it's really just the way technology is moving so it's not that different from many other players, is the lack of dedicated physical buttons. I hate touchscreen/touch-button/touch-slider (anything 'touch', basically) controls.

Oh, I'm not on my 3rd because they've fallen apart I lost them coz they were too small (iAudio 6 and now iAudio 7). Had to replace them because nothing else would do.

The iAudio 7's maximum capacity is 16GB, which only just meets your minimum requirement, but it's small in physical size. The screen can play videos, but it's too small for that. Drag and Drop is natively supported, the iAudio 7 supports USB Host as well (if you ever need it). The battery life on the iAudio 7 is superb, best player I've had yet - they claim 60hours playback from a full charge, and though I've never timed it, I've hardly ever needed to recharge it (based on about 2-4 hours listening per day).

Re: My MP3 Player is Deaded :(

Have a look at the SanDisk offerings to. I moved from an iPod to a 8GB Sansa Clip (They do other models which rival the iPods) and I have never looked back. The sound quality is better than the iPods, the earphones out the box are great and they are cheaper to. I paid £29.99 for this 8GB Sansa Clip and it craps all over the iPods I have had. The battery life on them are far superior to, at present I am getting 7 days out of the thing before a charge is needed, certainly beats the crap 4 hours I was getting from the iPod.

Big thumbs up for SanDisk from me.

I'm still on my Sandisk Sansa e280, and that's been brilliant. Battery life's superb, sound quality's excellent (once I got rid of the supplied earphones), UI's good, yes, it'll do drag and drop, albeit I use it with WMP, can't fault it really, so much so that as and when I replace that one, I'll be looking at Sandisk before anyone else.

Tell you what I am certainly glad I made the jump to SanDisk, will never touch another iPod again as they are really poor in comparison

I really like my cowon (iaudio D2). It's only a 4GB but it has an SD card slot so you can add upto 32GB any time you like

The GUI is pretty intuitive and the build quality although plastic is pretty good quality. For £90 (with a few deal codes for advancemp3players) it comes with a free leather case and protective plastic skin to

Re: My MP3 Player is Deaded :(

Sandisk certainly sounds like a definite contender

The GUI and build complaints were in regard to the Cowon S9 - from the engadget review (but then i've read reviews since that say it's very reponsive so..).

If they were actually released in Europe i would really be tempted by a Zune, even with the proprietary software. Hah maybe if i can wait until autumn!

Another Sansa whore here, this time with a View 16gb (again with a MicroSDHC slot if you want more). Never needs recharging unless you use it for video, which does drag the battery life down a bit. I think Sandisk have the range covered for most to be honest.

The included earplugs, as with most players, are a bit naff. Got some CX95s for mine, but CX300s would work well for a good bit less.

Re: My MP3 Player is Deaded :(

When it's time to pass my iPod to the bin, I shall be buying a Sandisk MP3 player. I don't need an 80 gig player in all honesty, and the sound quality of the iPod is awful, even with decent headphones on it.
