Selling a broken laptop- whole or parts?

For reasons I won't bother to go into, a friend and I have (quite legally, in case you were worried) ended up with a broken HP DV2500 laptop. The screen is split into 6, and I'm pretty sure it's because the inbuilt 8400 graphics chip has died (something for which they are reknowned).

Anyway it's no use to us so we want rid. We gave the hard disk back to the original owner in a caddy so she could get her files off it. It does however have 2x1gb DDR2 modules, a T2450 processor, a working battery and a working power supply- the screen itself is also fine I think as I did once persuade it to boot to a Vista startup screen before the old 6-way split came back.

So, the question is- bung it on ebay as is, or part it out? Any input welcome, tho sooner rather than later please as it needs to go on tonight.

Re: Selling a broken laptop- whole or parts?

No warranty on that 8400? Dell extended their warranties to cover them, any idea if HP did?

I would go for parts. Someone might want the battery and PSU. The RAM might sell for cheap. Doubt anyone will want the CPU.. not a big upgrade for anyone and too much hassle to change.

Sell the laptop whole or sell the PSU and bin the rest.
Is it really worth the aggro of selling lots of parts for not a lot of money back?

Dunno. I told her to complain to HP but they apparently didn't want the hassle (or couldn't find the invoice, or something). Anyway I can't send it back now, though that would of course have been the best thing to do.

It's not.. its a chip soldered to the board.

fleabay the screen, screen cable, inverter, ram, heatsink, keyboard, wireless if its seperate and the chip then. may take a while to shift everything but it will fetch more than flogging a dead lappy

Re: Selling a broken laptop- whole or parts?

In the end I just bunged it on listing what I thought were the useful parts (ram/screen/keyboard/proc/DVDRW drive/battery/psu). I could maybe get more for it if I parted it out but I suspect that would be at the expense of considerable time and effort.

    Thanks for the input all.

Re: Selling a broken laptop- whole or parts?

it does take time, i used to work for a laptop repair centre, they had a lot on ebay and auto re listed the items. chance is one of those places will buy it from you.

make sure you put plenty of pics of the case and a image of the screen when borked so they know what there getting. along with a zero refund policy as its being sold as broken with case in xxx conditions etc.

cover your back or some dum ass will buy it then lodge a gaypal dispute and you will lose if your not careful.

Re: Selling a broken laptop- whole or parts?

I sold a very old low end spec acer laptop on ebay last year, I was amazed to see that it sold for £50 to a company who buy them and break them for spares to repair other laptops with.

Hmm, someone wants me to send it to France. Dodgy? What can I do to make sure I'm not going to have PayPal problems, both in the case of sending it to France and in general?

Tough one, that. IIRC even recorded delivery isn't enough "proof"
I *think* you have to use special delivery.
Is there any way of avoiding paypal?
