    Table shelf

The table I have my projector on is a little too low. I figured that the best way to give it some height is to put a shelf on the table. I am not too sure where are the best places to look for, or even the right keyword I should be using to describe what I am looking for.

The problem is, when looking for shelves, I often end up with full sized ones designed to be put on the floor. Or the ones you fix to a wall. Ditto for book selves.

I've found this at Argos: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/8754073.htm - cheap and cheerful, though I wonder if it is strong enough to hold something twice it's weight. I also don't like the fact that it has legs.

This one from IKEA is pretty good: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80103688 but I can't order online, and it may be a little wide for my table. I like the adjustable shelves though.

Ideally, I would be able to find something similar to that, but with only one compartment that's about 50-60cm wide. That would be wide enough for the projector and a bit, yet fit comfortable on the table. Can anyone suggest where to look (I am really bad at shopping for furnitures).

    Cheers.

Make one? it'll cost a couple of quid, maybe even free to get some scrap bits from a timber yard.... bit of paint and it'll come up nice. That way you can make it exactly how you want it too.

^^^^^ sounds like a good idea to me

just remember to test with something that isn't as fragile as a projector

Absolutely, that second one from Ikea I could knock up in half an hour with Conti board from B&Q for less. Granted not whole lot less, 18 quid is quite reasonable for a bit of crappy chipboard but if you do it yourself you can tailor it to your own spec and more.

Much as it would be ideal, I have no power tool, no workshop and, honestly speaking, no experience with making my own furnitures.

    Re: Table shelf

Bah, don't be soft. A handsaw, a tape measure, a spirit level and a screwdriver is all you need. Few bits of Conti, some Conti-blocks and a bag of screws.

If you can measure, draw a straight line and work a handsaw without mutilating yourself then it's just a matter of using the top of the stairs to cut your boards over and screwing it together which you have to do with a flatpack anyway.

    Re: Table shelf

Maybe something boxy might be more stable/solid than a shelf, was thinking of those wall display box things that used to be around but can't see anything on first look; but would a cube or perhaps 2 back-to-back etc be an idea..? http://homeshopping.24studio.co.uk/c...GoogleBaseFeed
Two of these would give you a 'tabletop' of 60 & storage at either end, or you could probably customise something similar as they are usually self-assembly (and not bad price).

Or as you were looking at Argos would any of their pine shoe racks http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...ext%3ESHOE.htm be better than the bookcase?

    Re: Table shelf

    Thanks.

The thing about the cube is that it doesn't have any space at the back (for cables). The projector depth is 30cm, so it is preferable whatever is used as a depth equal or slightly bigger than that. Granted it doesn't matter that much if it is a little smaller, if everything else was spot on anyway.

To be honest DIY wouldn't work for me (I have one screw driver for my PC and that's it). I am sure that someone good with tools could build something even better than that thing from IKEA. Me, I probably can't saw straight and will probably end up with something that's not even straight.

    Re: Table shelf

^ That's an idea if I can't find anything else. Though at over 2kg a brick.. it's not light

I found this which dimension wise is PERFECT: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50114754

The problem? It says that it must be fixed to the wall. I can't think of a reason for that from the picture. Am I missing something obvious?

    Re: Table shelf

I wouldn't worry too much about the Ikea stuff saying about fixing to the wall, all Ikea shelving stuff comes with wall brackets but i've never fixed one to a wall.

First thing that sprang to mind with your post was a monitor stand...

Designed to take the weight, can get adjustable height ones, and most have a cable clip on the back to keep the cables neat.. but depends how high you need to lift it.
