"Why not put the DVD into your laptop and use the projector?"
"Well the film is old and hard to get, so can you download it?"
"No that would be illegal"

May i ask what the film in question was?

Most schools break the law on this sort of stuff anyway, all those times they show tv shows at the end of the year, when they show films that they taped off the tv or someone brought in on DVD - that's illegal

Our school had to get a license to show films just at lunchtimes. Depends on your interpretation on the funny laws about public audiences and whatnot, but yeah..

True, was the Jekyll and Hyde film classic I think.

There is no interpretation which would cover, downloading a film which no one has for free. There is a difference between having a public license to display a DVD film which the department or someone has brought in, than doing something which is illegal as far as the law goes anyway!
