    PIFTS.exe

Don`t know if this has been posted here already but there is a ****storm starting to erupt on the internet over this PIFTS.exe programme and Symantec`s Norton antivirus programme.

Basically it seems this little programme has been appearing on peoples computers and is linked to Symantec products, then sedning information to servers in Africa.

    http://digg.com/software/What_is_PIF...covering_it_up

    http://www.tech-linkblog.com/2009/03...piftsexe.html/

    http://forums.zonealarm.org/zonelabs...443981#U443981

It seems symantec are deleting any threads on their forums that mention PIFTS, so do they have something to hide? I don`t know. I`m not a Norton user, but i`m sure there are people here who are and will be curious.

I've NEVER liked Norton, total bloatware. Maybe this explains why.. ha!

    Spooky though.

Symantec have confirmed that it's part of their suite, more to follow. I don't know about anyone else, but there are very *very* few sources of virus and internet secrity info I will trust, and I'm certainly not goin gto get too excited about random forum postings and blogs. It's no concern to me anyways as I don't use it (though I do often beta test Symantec's stuff), but if there's no threat warning at Symantec, Kaspersky Labs, F-Secure, ISC (as linked above), Security Focus or one of the similar sites then I'm unlikely to get too excited.

    Clunk... are you on holiday?

Very good pun though - I'd be impressed with that if I came up with it myself

What I can't understand is why they've been removing discussion about it from their forums. Is it some type of phorm style monitoring which monitors your web behaviour and then relays this back to symantec?

I suppose we'll find out soon enough

I agree - if it wasn't for all the forum thread deletions and IP banning then I wouldn't have given this story a second glance. Suspicious!

No issue here, just an informative thread really, i figured there would be some people here interested or indeed concerned about it.

    Re: PIFTS.exe

From the ISC page linked above

    WARNING:

We've been sent an example of a web page targeting the term "PIFTS.exe" along with other popular search terms that lead to obfuscated javascript that leads in turn to actual malware.

Take care if you search for this: you might find the bad guys out there taking advantage of our interest in PIFTS.exe already.

At the time of writing the page we were notified about was not (anymore?) indexed in google, but YMMV.
This could easily be a big fat social engineering attack, and given the number of URLs indexed in Google I wouldn't be at all surprised. By all means do your research people, but be sure those links you click are to trustworthy sources...
