I got a password reminder email for my redundant FriendsReunited account (I have another that's been kept up to date) and was very shocked to see my old pen-pal at the top of the 'do you know' section when I logged in by accident. I have one secondary school and one university listed. She went to neither and lived in a different city. The only connection is a series of summer holidays when we were kids. The account has no friends listed and no details on me, apart from those two educational establishments.
As it turns out this was a pleasant surprise so I sent a message and got back in touch.
Could be dodgy though. I'd imagine there's lots of people who don't want to show they've been 'spying' on people.
The site claims that it works on a 'six degrees of separation' type thing. Yeah right. Either it's a lot more clever than I believe it to be, or they just track who's been looking for who.
Edit:I guess it's possible I looked at her profile at some point but I don't remember doing so. I have had the account since about 1998 though so anything's possible. From the FAQ:
Where does this list come from?
The list is created randomly but here are few of the ways that a person may end up in your list:
•They are listed at a place with you. For example you went to school together.
•You added them to your bookmarked friends previously. (This was a feature which has since been replaced by the Friends list).
•You have been in contact with the person previously through Friends Reunited. For example you may have received a message from them.
•You have looked at the persons profile before.
•You share friends. For example, a few old school friends may know someone from a neighbouring school, so we guessed you may know them too.
•Totally randomly! A few people just pop in there for no reason at all to keep you on your toes.
