    Chocolate tax??

    WTF??

This guy thinks that taxing chocolate is the way forward:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/...st/7938282.stm

What is with this country now?? Everything has to be solved with tax increases here and price increases there. I wonder how the rest of the world manages to survive without these good "taxes"??
Using his logic why not tax potatoes and sugar then? People would eat less chips and put less sugar on their cereal and in their tea and coffee. If we tax cooking oil then less people will use it for deep frying. Let's increase taxes on wheat so bread goes up in price and we eat less and ditto for rice too. Let's all tax alcohol more also. Let's tax eggs too, cream and full fat milk. All of these suggestions will cut obesity levels won't they?? No! Wrong!!

If anything it is people's over reliance on pre-processed food which is the main problem. If more people cooked healthier meals for themselves from base ingredients instead of buying pre-processed junk all the time it would be much better for their health. Also they are not necessary expensive or time consuming to prepare either. People are just lazy nowadays. Another factor is people do not exercise enough either.

Its typical with some people I bet he does not even like chocolate that much either !! It is just like those people who say we should ban FPS games and yet they themselves do not play them.

    Re: Chocolate tax??

    What?!

Thats ridiculous, this is gonna hit women the hardest

There are far more sensible things to tax than that... but really is it appropriate to go adding extra taxes to things in this economic climate, things aught to be getting cheaper or at least better value for money if the government wants people to start spending.

What do you expect the guy is an overpaid GP!! Probably got a nice pay increase this year too. Maybe they should dock their salary for a year or two to see how the rest of the public would survive with all these "good" tax increases. The same goes for some of these celebrity led food initiatives. Why not pay "x" amount for "x" better quality food? Why?? Because not everyone is a rich prat who is on another plane of existence from the rest of the world!!

Doctors do deserve a decent wage due to their hard work and years of training but GP salaries are just taking the piss now!!

    Re: Chocolate tax??

Absolute nonsense! Fit and healthy people eat chocolate too, why should we have to pay extra?

It’s just another idea to con us, but I’m sure the current government will be listening since they love the phrase "increase tax".

    Re: Chocolate tax??

Taxation is not the answer, self restraint not to gorge yourself on the stuff is. It would also have to be a stonking great big tax to make a difference where it is unaffordable too.

    I agree.

Also on the subject of food, there is a pyschological aspect to eating habits. The government is getting more and more controlling, taking more and more of our liberties away making it harder for people to enjoy themselves because we are all worrying more than ever about one thing or another. The media make things even worse by reminding us on a daily basis. Is it any wonder that people eat junk food, drink alcohol and take drugs? anything to make us feel better or provide escape.

Thats a pretty bleak view I admit.

In fairness chocolate is already expensive enough in these times.

I mean 80p for an 8 chunk dairy milk. Madness.

    Re: Chocolate tax??

After all, look at all the success that has been met with heavily taxing cigarettes over the last 30-odd years.

    What a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish.

Don't people realise you need to tackle the root cause of problems? This is like sticking a plaster on a gunshot wound. Totally pointless.

    Oooooohhhh....

This thread has made me want to go and buy a Mars bar

This suggestion is bad enough, but they'd have a violent revolt on their hands if they tried to add a bacon tax!!

    They'll probably side-step that revolt-inducing "health-issue" by bringing in a salt tax.

If they want to use tax to try and combat obesity, then they need to start taxing fat people, not chocolate. I eat plenty of chocolate while staying skinny and healthy so why should I be paying extra tax?

Taxing fat people = Oppressive + Discriminatory.

    Taxing chocolate = "Fair".

I would so lol though if an MP had the balls to suggest taxing fat people. Fatty Tax FTW.
