Tax Little Big Planet. And all Sim games.

First some GP taking about a chocolate tax and now this!! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! What is with this country and taxing every f""king thing!!
This crap alwats comes from people who have know clue about the items they like to tax. Their reasoning is that they do not find the aforementioned items or pastimes that interesting so let's tax them.
Why don't the prats start taxing knives, forks and grinders next?? They should start taxing Hollywood action movies too. In fact lets ban everything to make sure. Think of the children!!
How about the fact that rubbish parenting and a lack of role models are two of the major reasons why young people do these things.
Considering that sucessive governments have been undermining families too only adds to all the problems.

"The Prime Minister of the UK is being urged to impose high taxes on violent video games in an effort to reduce the number of knife-related crime. The request comes from Richard Taylor, who argues that young people 'feel that the law has no control over them. They just feel that they can go on the streets and do whatever they like.'"
How exactly does taxing games create an awareness of the law? Does he genuinely think that the sort of people who go out with a knife looking for trouble actually have any sort of knowlege of tax, or why games cost as much as they do?
And moreover, how many kids who think "they can go on the streets and do whatever they like" legitimately buy games?

Screw over the majority just because of a small minority.
That should be nu-labours motto now and not "things can only get better"
If Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

The worst thing is that the guy who proposed this does not seem to fathom that games like movies have age ratings. Why don't we make sure that all under 16 year olds go to bed at 7pm so that do not happen to see more "ADULT" oriented TV shows like CSI. Goodness grief that show should be banned as it could show children how to murder!! Think of the children!!
Again it comes down to parenting - NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS!!
If that happens I can see software piracy being worse than ever, across all formats.
I doubt it would ever happen, probably just more scaremongering by people who want to come up with stories about how the government are insane, then complain about how the government are insane. Snore.
What difference does it make? It's not as if all the GTA and Manhunt fans will suddenly turn around and say "Hey, these violent video games are getting really expensive these days. D'you want to get My Little Ponyz VI instead?"
That's fairly obvious. Mind you, considering how well the tax on cigarettes is working, it could be a winner![]()
first off all LOL @ pac man quote
wtf with all this taxing? as if games are not costing enough already
secondly who thinks that british goverment is high 90% off the time?
"Hey guuuuuyys i know what would be a AWWWWEEEESSSOOMEE idea"
lets tax games and blame it on violence
few weeks ago i read in news paper that british goverment said that rise off teen age pregnancies was due to gta 4? due to their sex thenes?
anyone else this they are extremely retarded or high?
Two things:
- Who is that Scottish GP that said chocolate should be taxed, and why does he matter?
- Who is Richard Taylor, and why does he matter?
I was actually joking to mum this morning about the chocolate tax being some nobody making a comment and being exaggerated far more than it should have been. I said it would be like someone working in Gamestation saying video games should be taxed.
It's not like Gordon Brown himself has said there will be a tax on games and chocolate. It's nobodies making silly suggestions that get blown up by the media because they stir people's emotions. It's not much different to someone telling the council they should force a shop to change its front door from blue to red. But no one cares about a shop in a back street in a small village.
I think the tax is unlikely - but surely it would make more sense to have a knife tax to fund the battle against knife crime?
Why not a hoodie tax, a person committing knife crime might also wear a hoodie. Shoe/trainer tax...
The guy isn't actually an MP, or qualified in any way to make an informed decision about this - besides being given an impressive title that doesn't really mean much. I appreciate he wants to cut knife crime and i think what happened to his son was awful, but he doesn't know what he's talking about. This is Damilola Taylor's dad if i read right.
1) There have been no (as far as i'm aware) conclusive trials showing that video games turn kids into bad people. I believe one of the last studies that was done concluded that the effect is, in fact, the opposite. Similar to using a punchbag to relieve stress.
2) There have been MANY conclusive studies that show bad parenting causes kids problems in later life.
3) How does this work for second hand games? They'll still be "too cheap".
4) Once again, don't buy your children games if you don't approve of them. The rules about buying them are pretty damn strict in the first place and the number of underage kids buying GTA is - realistically - minimal. The way kids get these games is their parents giving into pressure.
5) Arguably, and i say this very loosely, music is far worse than video games. They are real live people, real live role models. 50 Cent for instance, released a game involving himself shooting up terrorists in "unidentifiedistan" - now, surely that's worse than a game with a fictional hero hmm? Music is also a lot more accessible and is a much bigger culture than gaming - i'd bet parents wouldn't think twice about buying an album that had questionable content in the lyrics (Soulja Boy for instance, lyrics are pretty vile if you actually look at them).
6) Why don't they just make cutlery more expensive generally? I don't think putting age caps on them does any difference, if anything it's a bit ridiculous - i was ID'd for buying some tableware for university (i mean you'd hurt your hand trying to stab someone with my table knives).
The piracy issue is important, if they hike up prices, gamers will see the value of just pirating even more. Surely the game designers aren't really digging this? It's going to mean less people buy their games and the government is effectively putting a finger in their pie.
It's far too easy to blame everything on computer games. Years ago after a guy tried to shoot a teacher (luckily, all shots missed) and ended committing suicide, the media blamed final fantasy...
That's one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. It just wreaks of "PLEASE SOMEBODY DOOO SOMETHING!!! ARGHHHHHHHH!" kind of panic.
omg1tstehv1deogames! lolz.
Riiiight.
So taxing violent video games is going to make "young people" (those pesky kids) feel that the law now has control over them? Of course! Why didn't I think of that?!
Wasn't it a nintendo person that first coined this phrase ?
Anyhow, the government are probably looking for ways to increase their revenue after lowering VAT to 15% and then bailing all the banks out.
Seeing as gaming is a 'growing' market, I bet they've just decided we'll tax that so that they can improve balancing their spreadsheets.
