    Struggle getting to sleep

Just wondering if im the only one that has this.
I can be really tired some evening but when i go to bed i'm really full of energy like i'm a little kid on sweets! I don't really feel tired afterwards and just wonder if it due to working shifts at work. If i'm working through the night i can have a tired stage and then be fine for a while.
It just really randomly happens but it's fairly off putting as the next day i've got to get up to go to work. Anyone else have it and how do you deal with it?

Wow! I am not the only one!!

OK, some of the things I have found actually to help:
    1. Don't go on your computer before bed - about 1-1/2 hrs rest from computer before seems to help.

    2. Read a book before bed. Failing this listen to an audio cassett may do the same

    3. Do relaxing stuff before bed.

    4. No caffine or chocalate before bed.

    5. Get into a regular sleeping pattern (even in the weekend, force yourself to get up)

    Other ideas not yet tried:
    1. If you cannot sleep for more than 1/2 hour, get up, and do something - you are probably thinking of some stuff, and getting down. Do something (TV, read ect) to take your mind off it.

    2. Write down things on your mind, in a diary or log.

err thats about all I can think of. Anything bothering you tho (dont have to post it publically), as this could be causing it, and often does for me.

    Hope it helps

    Re: Struggle getting to sleep

I also have issues getting to sleep, even when I feel tired. But since I'm a student I don't have the problem of needing to get up for work in the morning, so most of the time I just stay up until I'm totally knackered, then go to bed whenever that is. Although once I'm asleep I have issues waking up Slept for 12 hours straight the other day.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

No caffine for up to four hours before sleep. Especially if you feel as though your heart is beating too fast when you're trying to go to sleep.

In the health field what you are asking about is called 'sleep hygiene' and lots can be googled on the subject.
One general note of caution - dont be tempted to go down the chemical aid route (and that includes alcohol). It's a one way street if used on an even semi-regular basis, that just needs more and more

    Re: Struggle getting to sleep

if your going to have sex, start at like 9pm at the latest, i find that when i'm stressed if i'm on the job at 11pm i won't be sleeping till 1am.... Apparently this isn't that un-common!

look at your diet/exercise reigime, eating too little can also course you problems, as your body gets used to working on too little energy. Eat lots at breakfast, less at lunch and little dinner.

I've been having problems the past few months with horrific headaches, turns out i'm now going to have to join the four eyes club But its amazing that little things like that can mess up your sleep!

    Re: Struggle getting to sleep

I like having insomnia really. I get some of my best work done in the early hours.

I have found reflexology, a nightcap, nightol, and nookie all help at varying times. But mostly I don't bother.

apart from the nookie, which is always good, i can get a good 3 hrs off the back that. Wake up refreshed, do a couple of hours work & then kip for an hour or two before work.

But then my bodyclock may be messed, when I was in Canada recently which is 6 hours behind (where i was) I slept like a log every night for a fortnight.

    Re: Struggle getting to sleep

Like quite a few people on HEXUS, I have insomnia too. I often go through patches of 'chronic insomnia' too.

Like 0iD, I think it has advantages Clubbing being one, being able to work for long periods another. I do find that it can catch up on me sometimes though.

Sadly it doesn't seem to be taken too seriously in the UK, which I honestly believe has a lot to do with our working styles. My doctor didn't take it seriously at first, but after insisting I wanted a 2nd opinion I managed to get a doctor who was brilliant.

I do have medication to help control it, purely because doing a 9-5 job isn't possible without them.

The biggest problem insomnia has is the 'lazy' stigma attached to it. Some people just can't understand that people with insomnia don't simply 'go to bed' to sleep.

If it is interfering with your life handscombmp, honestly, see a doctor There any many underlying causes that you may not be aware of (I'll leave it at that though, no medical advice should be given on a forum)

I wouldn't say its interfering with my life i just find it really annoying when on some nights i can feel tired but as soon as i put my head to the pillow i feel wide awake.

The more i think about it though it does seem to be when i god to bed straight after using the pc so perhaps i'd better go now

    Re: Struggle getting to sleep

I've only had insomnia a couple of times in my life and it was mostly because of stress (mainly exams). Anyhow I find a bit of light exercise during the evening helps be go to sleep much more easily.

If the insomnia persists, then I recommend you go see a doctor. If it just continues for a couple of days then I would not worry too much about it.

    Re: Struggle getting to sleep

When I'm stressed I tend to sleep too much, I guess it's hiding away from what is bugging me.

That said I can never ever sleep unless there is noise, usually audio books or dvd's (music tends to mess my sleep up). I find my brain goes into over drive if it is quiet and I just end up thinking for hours and if I do sleep.. it's very restless and I'm just thinking in partial sleep (I think lol).

My solution so that i don't annoy anyone else (other than my g/f) was to get a pillow with a speaker in it. Works a treat and the noise is generally contained even from a partner if your ear is over the speaker area. It's far more comfortable than headphones and reasonable sound quality

When I'm not stressed I turn into a bit of an insomniac, just don't feel the need to sleep, too much fun stuff to do

I think I must get this aswell then, and atm I'm going through a bit of a bad patch. I can go to bed at 11 and not get to sleep until 3 in the morning, even if I'm off the computer at 9. Its odd, and can be rather irritating.
